2024 Blueprint: Visualization for Beginners to Help You Reach Your Goals

The why and how of visualization, plus a tip to help you bring your visualization to life.

Visualization is not a new-age practice for only spiritual gurus and yogis. While yes, visualization is usually a component of meditation, it is actually a practice that has been utilized by athletes, business leaders, and even actors to help them reach their goals.

Visualization has always felt like a far-off concept that is difficult and time-consuming to me, but it isn’t and doesn’t have to be. We mere mortals can adopt a visualization practice to help us reach our every-day and New Year’s goals too.

Why Use Visualization?

When you set a goal for yourself, think of visualization as an added boost to help you stay connected to your motives behind why you set the goal, to maintain motivation, to improve goal clarification, and to improve self-efficacy.

More Complete Image

Visualization will fully set the scenario and context from which you can springboard off of to help you accomplish your goals.

A clearly defined goal gives you a roadmap and a more complete mental image to aid in your visualization.

Clarification

To clearly set a goal, include:

- Define exactly what you want to achieve

- State your motives, or reasons, for wanting to reach the goal

- The timeframe, or deadline, you have to complete the goal

- How you will track your progress

- Outline the strategy you will follow, your milestones, objectives, and daily steps you’ll take to go from start to completion

- Identify any potential roadblocks or setbacks and how you will overcome them

- How you will feel when you succeed and how you will reward yourself/celebrate your accomplishment

By being clear from the start, visualizing each step and action is easier, and you procrastinate less because you know what to do next.

Visualization will also help to clarify and define your desired outcome even further.

Visualization helps you stay connected to your motives behind setting the goal, which makes it easier to stay focused on the objectives.

Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy is your belief in your ability to reach your goal. It is your belief in your ability to act in a way that supports reaching your goal.

When you practice visualization, you are seeing yourself take, and achieve, each step necessary to reach your goal. As you do this more and more, the belief that you can do everything necessary increases.

Increase Motivation

Your motivation increases with visualization, not only because you feel more capable of achieving your goal but also because, by visualizing yourself step by step, getting closer to your goal clarifies the rewards and benefits of success, making you more motivated to work towards the goal.

How to Practice Visualization

Visualization is most effective when done consistently. But before you start thinking you don’t have time for this, let me assure you that it does not have to be time-consuming.

Visualization does not need to take long.

  1. Just start by thinking of your motives, or reasons, for setting the goal.
  2. Then picture yourself completing each step from beginning to end.
  3. Think about any challenges and setbacks you might encounter and then imagine yourself overcoming them.
  4. And then finally, how will it feel when you succeed?

This simple step-by-step takes less than five minutes but but becomes a guide for your behavior and daily habits.

Bring Your Visualization to Life

Now that you know why you should and how to practice visualization, a simple exercise that can really bring your mental imagery to life is creating a vision board.

A vision board is a physical or digital space that is filled with pictures, symbols, or words that serve as a visual representation of what you hope to achieve.

A survey found that “those who keep images, photos, or vision boards of such goals are almost twice as confident (59 percent vs. 31 percent) that they will achieve them than those who don’t.”

Creating one is simple. You can create a physical board by cutting out images and pinning them to a board, or you can create one using a digital app or notes application.

So, to go along with clearly defining your goals and a daily visualization practice, creating a vision board is the perfect way to cultivate the mental imagery that helps you achieve your 2024 goals.

Statistics say only 8% of people who set New Year’s goals are successful.
