Vilnius, Lithuania: Your Perfect Getaway Destination
Here’s why Vilnius surprised me in a very positive way and why you should visit this place

In June 2022, I embarked on a 4 day weekend getaway to a city, country and region I never visited before: Vilnius, Lithuania, North Eastern Europe.
I have been to almost every country in Western, Central and Southern Europe, but the Baltics were, before this trip, one of the few regions of the continent which I had never seen before.
I chose Lithuania and its capital Vilnius to be my first Baltic experience, because it’s the biggest of the 3 Baltic countries and thus it tempted me the most.
As I had never visited this part of Europe before, it’s fair to say that I didn’t exactly know what to expect from Lithuania and Vilnius in particular.
But one thing is for sure: Vilnius was absolutely amazing and out of all the places in Europe that I’ve visited, this one was surely the one that surprised me the most, as it exceeded literally all my expectations!
First of all, Vilnius itself from a sightseeing and architectural point of view might not be the prettiest and most eye catching city, but it’s surely one of the most idyllic and greenest cities I’ve ever seen in Europe.
From the Hill of 3 Crosses you get a decent hawk-eye view over the whole city and its landscapes, and I can tell you that from above, it doesn’t really look like you’re in a capital city but rather a big rural village somewhere in the woods.

When you hike up to the Hill of Three Crosses to get this view, you also don’t really feel like being in a city anymore, as you are literally hiking through a forest to get up there!
Vilnius is the perfect city for nature lovers or dog owners, and the perfect mixture between capital city life (and thus very good infrastructure) and idyllic village life; when you’re fed up with the hustle and bustle of the centre of the city, you can easily without walking too long or without being reliant on public transport, chill out or wander in one of the many natural parks of the city.
The Vilnia River passing through the city also makes up for some beautiful scenery throughout the city, which you can see in the picture below.

As Vilnius is not that big of a city, you’ll surely manage to see all the must see attractions in the space of 2 days, and one of these is the former independent Republic of Uzupis, located on a peninsula inside Vilnius, and where you can still get your Passport stamped as a souvenir!
Another eye-opening must that I reckon anyone that visits Vilnius cannot miss is the Museum of Occupation and Freedom Fighters, which depicts the pretty sad and frightening episode of Lithuania’s 20th century, starting from the Nazi occupation followed by the Soviet occupation up until the country’s liberating independence. The Museum itself is located in a pretty unique location as well: the former KGB Headquarters, which were also used to torture and kill prisoners.

When you go to Vilnius for a relaxing, sightseeing getaway, you surely won’t be disappointed!
But the second reason why Vilnius completely stunned me and exceeded all my expectations is its vibrant nightlife and awesome people!
Vilnius might not be the biggest city, its actually pretty small, and its also fair to say that I was there at the beginning of summer, so I can’t tell what the vibe is like in winter.
But judging by what I experienced in the 4 days that I was there, the nightlife scenery was one of the most vibrant I have witnessed in Europe. The atmosphere in the main nightlife area in the centre of Vilnius is absolutely brilliant, with a fantastic mixture of local Lithuanians, international tourists, expats and also neighbouring Latvians and Belarussians only coming over for the night!
Long story short, Vilnius has one of the most international nightlife vibes I’ve ever experienced in Europe. As all the main bars and clubs are located in the same area, a fantastic and vibrant nightlife scenery is created. It sometimes felt like being at an international party tourist hotspot like Ibiza or Magaluf, such was the amazing atmosphere! (much cheaper though than these places!)
The fact that I didn’t expect this at all, made the experience even better!
But of course, what mainly makes the nightlife scenery so fabulous in Vilnius is its people. Lithuanians are amongst the most open-minded, welcoming and warm-hearted people I ever came across, and one thing is for sure: they can drink!
Regarding prices, having been to every Balkan country recently (See my story “Balkan Summer”), Lithuania is surely not as cheap as Albania and Macedonia, but compared to other EU countries, it’s still quite cheap. When you’re from the UK or another expensive Western European country, it’s still heaven on earth!
As such, I stayed in a huge and very comfortable apartment in the city centre paying 72 euros for a 4 night stay!
Whilst going out in Vilnius, I also stumbled on something I had never seen before in a nightclub: an art gallery!

It’s safe to say that the atmosphere of Vilnius’s nightlife is made pretty authentic and unique by the awesome local people and the international vibe.
I went to Vilnius without any expectations, but, as so often when you have no expectations at all, you’ll get positively surprised!
I have many places that I’ve visited where I say that I’ll go back to, but we all know that it’s not possible to go back to every place you liked, because as a passionate traveller, you always want to discover new places, which is what brought me to Vilnius, Lithuania in the first place!
But I can safely say that my 4 day stay in Vilnius was an absolute blast and that I’ll surely be back in Lithuania and discover more of this great warm-hearted nation as well as the neighbouring countries of the region, in the not so distant future!
