Vienna Rathaus Christmas Market 2022

The ‘main’ Vienna Christmas market is now open, November 19 to December 26.

It takes place on the plaza in front of the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall, new being relative, since it was finished in 1883).

We visited it this year for the umpteenth time, and it was beautiful, as always.

I will say, though, that the number of booths has fallen significantly from pre-Covid times. I’m not sure if it’s because of last year’s disaster — they opened, and then closed almost immediately, or because of this year’s theme — Sustainability.

While politically correct, Organics (aka Bio, in German) and sustainable production in general are politically correct, they really aren’t much fun.

There seemed to be one major Wuerstel stand with massive lines because — how many Bio-wuerstel vendors could there be? I think the organizers might have found the only vendor in Austria. I didn’t even know organic hotdogs existed. Kind of defeats the purpose, IMO.

Likewise, one standalone Pommes (french fries) stand. Line around the block, so to speak.

Also big empty spaces where booths should have been. My Kartoffel mit Knoblauchsauce (baked potato) stand of year’s past was sadly nowhere to be found.

Sigh.

But, it was beautifully decorated as always, and is simply a lovely place to wander around and sip a Gluehwein. (German specialty hot spiced wine)

Buying Stuff

And there were (as always) fun places to shop — apparently this was a sustainable glass ornament seller. Whatever that means. But it was something to see.

Lots of fun for the kids:

To Sum Up — 7 out of 10

It wasn’t my favorite location for eating, drinking, or buying this year (though in year’s past, it has topped my list in one category or another).

However, I’ve always enjoyed going and there, and this year is no different. There would simply be no reason to skip it if you’re in town. I look forward to next year!

(But please, kind sirs, drop the Bio focus!)
