Veritas True Crime Pub — Everything You Need to Know

The new Medium publication is dedicated to working with new and experienced writers who are just as passionate about true crime stories as we are … and we are actively looking for new writers and editors!

This new publication, owned by veteran editor Kurt Dillon, who is also an editor for ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications here on Medium, is eager to work with both new and aspiring writers who share the same burning passion for true crime stories as we do.

Because the pub is new, we are seriously looking for new writers, and the criteria and application process will be published in another article here shortly.

What types of stories will this new pub be interested in?

Anything true-crime related will be accepted, but of course, the most compelling are those unsolved cases we all eat up like chocolate after a bad breakup. We will have a particular interest in the true crime stories that haven’t already been the focus of national, or even global headlines for years.

That being said, writing stories about those cases is okay as well, but unless you have some new evidence to tell us about or a new angle to inject into the case, the story will most likely get lost in the sea of other articles that have already been written about the subject. This is okay if you’re already an established writer who has just always wanted to write about the story, but for new writers who are still looking to find their niche, being different from the pack is never a bad thing.

What kind of writers will the new pub be looking for?

The short answer is that writers of all types, from all backgrounds, and all experience levels are welcome here.

Throughout my 30 + years as an English professor, publications and acquisitions editor for Simon & Schuster, and a mentor to young and aspiring writers of all backgrounds and experience levels, I have a deep desire to mentor youthful and inexperienced writers who are looking to take that next step from being self-critiqued bloggers and help them to elevate their unique skillsets by developing the tools that will be necessary to make the jump into the highly competitive world of commercial writing.

Because of that, all writers for this new pub will receive one-on-one mentoring in their story writing. Whether your goal is to be an investigative journalist like me, a crime writer, a lifestyles reporter, a general news writer, an author, or even a beat writer for your favorite team, it is my goal to help you succeed in your endeavor to become a professional writer.

If you already are a professional writer, I can definitely use your help in constructing one of the best, most respected, and most prolific true crime pubs — not only on Medium but in the genre of true-crime writing in general.

Yes. Our extremely popular podcast: The Veritas 7 — True Crime Podcast has really taken the world by storm and has quickly risen to be one of the best and well-renowned true-crime genres among our listeners.

What does that mean for the writers of this pub?

It means that once Veritas True Crime pub writers demonstrate a certain proficiency and commitment to excellence, they will have the opportunity to assist with the research, writing, and production of the podcast (if that's something that interests them — there will be no requirement to do that).

Under certain circumstances, writers of this pub may also be asked to appear as guests on the podcast, if one or more of their stories align with cases being investigated by podcast staff, if they demonstrate professionalism, and if it’s believed they have a genuinely fresh new angle or information to add to the presentation of the story for public dissemination.
