Vanilla Cuttings.

Patience and One step-at-a-time.

8 Vanilla vine cuttings from the tips of the vine’s 4 growing points. Picture by John Rose.

Emotional time Vanilla running out of space, What to do?

In my usual experimental world made emotional decision, Not selling vine, Not selling lights, Take cuttings and start vertical vines.

One thing to make feel good decision entirely another to actually do it!

My vanilla planted from single commercial cutting, Decided to take new cuttings and grow more vines! Follow what I did 7 years ago when starting out, However before first cut decided to check internet.

As usual, Gems of knowledge hidden in dross, Each vanilla plantation and second bedrooms unique micro-environments, Growers develop and experiment, Coming to their own firmly held belief in what works.

Having worked out what I would do next step was garden centre.

There are helpful sales people opinionated ones and opinionated arrogant ones, Mine was loud as well.

“Want to raise vanilla cuttings can you advise me?” Salesperson proclaimed “Vanilla won’t grow in Sydney!”, Then proceeded in excruciating detail where vines actually grow, Interrupted painful excruciating monologue “Have LED lights!”, “They don’t work!”, Disbelief warred with other dark emotions, Calmed myself.

In the end asked “Where’s cutting and seed raising mix?” No reply, Just pointed disdainfully with crooked finger, Wicked witch began stalking next hapless victim.

Complained to son, “What do you expect? You should know never to ask helpful sales people!”, He went to make coffee muttering “Fathers never learn!”

What I’ve Done.

Took long cuttings including tips, Divided each cutting, Eight in total.

First stage, Two per pot, Deeply planted, Cutting and seed mix enriched with seaweed pellets, Daily happy fussing.

Once good signs Growth and roots Think it’ll take about 3–4 weeks, Although one internet site stated 6 months, Enter stage 2.

Second stage one per pot, Half orchid mix half organic potting mix, Seaweed pellets blood and bone, I’ll know when ready for planting out to vertical frames.

Planning for 3 frames using current LED’s, Expecting around 60 vanilla beans in annual harvest after growing 4–5 years.

My Current Vine, 7 years old, 200+ feet

Vanilla vine continues to amaze and delight.

Vine’s only link with soil is via aerial roots, Three pots provide water and nutrients through root maze.

Watered daily, Fertilised fortnightly, LED lights set 12 hours per day, Vent fan runs 1 hour twice daily.

Created semi-tropical micro-climate in second bedroom, Been this way for 7 happy years.

Blessed be.
