Using Medium to Extend the Reach of your Personal Blog

Medium can be a useful tool for bloggers, you just need to use it the right way.

I first started my technology blog, The Detechor, in May of 2020 towards the end of lockdown in France. With my studying slowly decreasing towards the end of this peculiar year I decided to start a blog about the impact of tech on our lives, a subject that interests me a lot and that I have a reasonable amount of knowledge about. After designing my website and posting a few articles, I decided to start promoting my blog across various platforms, namely social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest) but also Medium.

When I discovered Medium I instantly fell in love with the concept, allowing writers to publish their stories and articles whilst getting paid for their work and all that with zero ads! The website is very well designed, there is an accompanying mobile app and there are millions of incredible articles to read. As you can imagine there was little hesitation in signing up to the Medium Partner Program, which rewards writers for their work according to the views, reads, and time spent on each story by Medium members (paying medium users).

Whilst I have been republishing my blog post to Medium I definitely noticed an increase in traffic to my blog, however that is not to say I didn’t encounter problems along the way. Here is how to use Medium to help you with your personal blog and also what to look out for so you don’t fall into what I call, the “Medium Trap”.

Linking back to your blog

When writing a blog 2 things are essential, writing quality stories/ articles, and getting your blog noticed which Medium can help with. Some articles I have read on the internet suggest only putting a paragraph of your blog post on Medium and linking back to your website for the rest. However, in my opinion, this isn’t the best thing to do because Medium won’t curate your story in topics if it’s unfinished (and getting curated is very important for reaching a larger audience). Additionally, if you’ve joined the Medium Partner Program, you won’t be earning anything from this story because Medium takes into account Member reading time as I mentioned above.

Instead, I recommend publishing the entire story and leaving a link back to your blog at the end, asking your readers to check it out if they enjoyed the story. I have done this for all my stories that I originally published The Detechtor, here is an example:

By doing this, you are giving the reader the option to check out some of your other work without forcing them which in my experience will frustrate the reader.

Use your profile page

When readers enjoy what you write, they may well decide to follow you on Medium and will undoubtedly check your profile page. On this page, they will have access to your “Featured” and “Latest” stories but furthermore, they will be greeted by your biography and a link to your Twitter account, it is these last 2 things that I suggest you utilise.

In your bio, you should mention your blog and link back to it, if the reader is using Medium on a browser then this link will become clickable however if they are using the mobile app it will not (thought determined readers could always copy and paste it into a browser). This is something very easy to do if you haven’t already, just go to your profile page, click on edit profile and press “Save” when you’re done.

Connect your Twitter account to Medium, once again this is very easy to do and will give your readers a direct link to your Twitter account where are undoubtedly tweeting about your latest stories. Just go to your settings, connect the account and click on “Show link to your Twitter account on your profile page”.

Don't get distracted

When I first started writing, this was less of an issue because I was focused on finding new subjects to write about on my blog, but as I continued using Medium I eventually started writing about other subjects completely unrelated to technology that I could only publish on Medium. Not helped by the fact that I was getting fewer ideas for new articles about the impact of tech, I found myself working less and less on my blog and writing more on Medium.

Thanks to the Medium Partner Program I was even being rewarded with a bit of cash, it may have only been something like 6$ a month but it was an incentive to continue writing.

I have since then realised what was happening and am now getting back to my blog, writing more articles and trying to promote it but I didn’t even realise what was happening until I checked my statistics and my unique visitors had gone down by 79%!

How to avoid this

If you are considering writing about other subjects that don’t fit into your blog, Medium is great just make sure you continue with your original plan because, in the long run, your blog could become very successful, it just takes time and dedication. Although the Medium partner program is great, the money you can make from a successful blog is much more substantial because of the variety of income streams available, namely ads, affiliate links, exclusive articles requiring a subscription, and more.

I hope you enjoyed this article and that it’ll help you write on Medium and your blog in perfect harmony!
