WRITING
How to Use Kickers, Titles & Lists
Step-by-step guide
I learned a lot in my first months on Medium: it is crucial to read and write a lot. But no matter how good your content is — if you don’t structure your work, it will be hard to read.
People will lose focus. In the worst case, they stop reading your articles.
To make it easier for my fellow writers and readers, I created topic-related lists. You can see and create your lists here:

I sort my topics into those lists, so you can read everything related to the topic you want:
- Poetry Collection
- Postpartum Depression
- Personal & Relationships
- Religious Abuse — Jehovah’s Witnesses
- Writing
- Narcissistic Abuse
- Business & IT
- Others
In addition, all my articles got a kicker, a title, and a subtitle.
Do you use a kicker in addition to your title and subtitle?
Here you can see how that will look:

I formatted the title with the big “T”, the subtitle with the small “t” and in the line above the title, I formatted the text with the small “t”:

This will create a kicker. For a better reading experience, I write my kickers in capital letters.
Tips
The names of my kickers are the names of the list, where I sort them. So it is easy to have an overview of all topics.
