Using ChatGPT to Write Your Comments Achieves the Opposite of What You Want
Unless what you want is to sound like a robot.

Can you spot a comment written by ChatGPT?
Because let me tell you, after almost 7 months on Medium, I sure as heck can.
They seem to pop up more than ever now. You know exactly what I’m talking about, too.
As an experiment, I asked ChatGPT to write a comment in response to a recent article of mine. Here’s what it spat out:
“Absolutely love this perspective! The allure of get-rich-quick schemes can be tempting, but the reality is often far from the glamorous promises. Your insight into the equally damaging idea of “Get Rich Slowly” is spot on. Waiting for years before seeing serious returns on hard work isn’t the only option.
“Get Rich Steadily” is a refreshing approach. The idea of building a personal online platform, creating sustainable rhythms in your work, and developing growing income sources resonates with the idea of cultivating success over time. It’s about being intentional, consistent, and patient while actively working towards financial stability. This approach not only minimizes the risk of disappointment but also allows for a more sustainable and fulfilling journey towards financial success. Great advice for anyone navigating the complex world of entrepreneurship!”
While there are certainly human-ish elements in that comment (and I’m sure you could further train ChatGPT to more effectively mimic your person tone of voice), it still sounds like a robot.
I see these all the time. And there’s no point in sugar-coating it: I absolutely hate them.
An exercise in futility
AI-generated comments are as blatantly obvious as the AI-generated articles that “writers” continue to publish on Medium every day (without ever disclosing they’ve used it).
Yes, using ChatGPT undoubtedly saves a ton of time and effort.
But does anyone who’s ever encountered AI content read these articles beyond the first paint-by-numbers line? Highly unlikely.
Using ChatGPT to write your comments or articles achieves the opposite of what you want (unless what you want is to sound like a non-human entity).
You’ll only end up producing a lot of content that no-one reads, that consequently generates negligible earnings on this platform, or kills your engagement potential on social media.
I mute anyone who replies to me on X/Twitter using ChatGPT. I’m not interested in conversing with a robot.
But I am interested in talking to you, and I’d love to keep you updated on my work — join my Medium mailing list here.
Choose humanity
There’s a simple solution to all this, too: just write genuine comments, from the heart.
It’ll take you less time to type an authentic response and bop the enter key than it will to copy a post, paste it into Chat GPT, ask it to write a response, maybe hone that response further, copy it, paste it back into the social media platform, and reformat it before “replying” to the original creator.
If you think that’s saving you any time at all, you’re bonkers.
Please, fellow content creators, write from the heart. Just share your authentic reaction to what you read. That’s what others will connect with, and want to respond to themselves.
And those genuine online engagements are what will drive your personal platform growth best in the months ahead.
