Why do I promote Unlearning so much, when I present inspirational people and stories on the PowerMinds Channel?

On the channel, I show a rich diversity of people and their colorful stories of building a life of happiness.

These leaders and their stories all have something in common: they have achieved great success through unlearning.

They challenged the status quo, innovated with something powerfully new, and, in this process, reinvented themselves.

Take, for example, the interview I did with PowerMind Hamza Azeem.

Hamza developed a very successful international business and realized his full potential as a graphic designer. When the Covid crisis struck, he could not pursue his career in aviation, so he re-invented himself .

Also, I interviewed PowerMind Han.

Han is Financial Freedom Architect and Founder of Byte Sized Investments. Han built a real estate empire and achieved 6 figures remotely. Watch the really inspiring video by clicking on the link below.

Han actually brings his accumulated experiences to the benefit to many others who with to succeed in real estate. He creates great content on social media that can help you to convert your 9 to 5 salary into income generating assets and to buy your first cashflowing property.

And last but not least, I interviewed PowerMind Archana Shetty. She also mentioned some great examples about unlearning when she shared her advice on Design Thinking.

Archana is founder of several businesses and above all a High Impact Leadership Coach who makes a difference for leaders everyday. She also believes in the power of Unlearning.

All of them, Hamza, Han and Archana unlearnt their previous habits and patterns of going about their lives and succeeded in something completely different.

I firmly believe that this is the one skill that we must all embrace for our future on this planet; it actually helps us be more adaptive and flexible to ambiguity and constant change. But why is this so important?

The Top Future Skill: Adaptability

As we navigate through an ever-changing and increasingly ambiguous world, it’s important to let go of old habits and beliefs that no longer serve us.

Unlearning allows us to make room for new ideas and ways of thinking, which is crucial for personal and professional growth.

And second, if we are able to unlearn, it fosters a mindset of inclusivity, as we are ready to accept multiple ways to succeed.

It fosters this richness of pathways to happiness.

Busting Received Wisdom

Unlearning is also about letting go of received wisdom.

You probably also know someone who says, “No, this won’t work.” The one best way to do this is like this….”

Reality is different; there is no one-way path to success. No recipe, no model.

Unlearning is crucial for embracing diversity in methods of achieving something, as it allows for normalizing a diversity of success stories.

This is important for work life, as it allows those with different stories to shine.

Embracing diversity in success stories is key to promoting happiness and success for all.

How Does Unlearning Actually Work?

Our preconceived notions of success often limit us subconsciously.

This is why we need to consciously connect the decision with a positive feeling to challenge our own thinking.

Unlearning is a conscious decision to create a new habit. I have described this in detail in this article; it is called the Joyful Realization Exercise.

And in turn, what this does is rewire our brains by challenging old structures, connecting positive feelings to new ideas, and normalizing different perspectives.

How Does the Habit of Unlearning Work in Everyday Life?

Let’s consider this example.

We all have this preconceived idea of what success might look like.

When I ask myself how success might look, I might subconsciously associate:

  • a huge house or villa, luxurious holidays, a fancy car

Now, whenever this idea pops into my mind, I create a conscious habit to

  • I will challenge this old preconceived idea as soon as I think it.
  • asking myself if this is really so and thinking of something else that might represent success.
  • Now the key is to connect a positive feeling to that something else.
  • If you are in the presence of others, say out loud that you just found yourself thinking a really old idea and that you respect the fact that this is just one way to read reality.
  • Then suggest to the others another way that success might look like:
  • If you speak it, you create reality, and if you speak about it highly enthusiastically, the others will pick up on that energy.

While you speak about it, you create a new reality: you let the people around you know that you don’t believe in this preconceived idea.

This can even create a ripple effect if you do it repeatedly.

Children, for instance, will pick this up very quickly. If you repeatedly say to children that it is a very out-of-date idea that women are inferior to men and you speak openly about it, they will, guess what?

They will do the same. They will say that same sentence to their friends at the next opportunity.

Humans learn by imitation and repetition.

So it is our joint responsibility to be that example and challenge preconceived ideas.

How About Stereotyped Ideas That Are Stronger Than Your Conscious Thoughts?

Yes, I get it. After all, there is a basic law of human psychology that states that we are prone to labeling things into categories in order to come to terms with the huge amount of information in our world.

This process as such is actually not the problem.

It is our judgement and hierarchy-building of these categories that is the problem. For example, we tend to present one category as normal and others as divergent.

Now, the first step to improvement here is awareness. As long as we are aware of it, we can change this.

And did you know that we can actually rewire our brains to change that — by talking and thinking about things in different ways and challenging these labels?

This slowly but gradually creates a new social reality.

You might want to watch the brilliant interview I did with Neuro Change Solutions Consultant, Maria Luisa Engels, who shares the neuroscientific explanation behind this process.

So try it in your own life — challenge your own thinking by speaking out loud what is not acceptable any more.

The more people that do it, the more we change our world — together.
