LIFE WITH SUSAN
Use the Power of Silence in Your Daily Routine
it’s free and effective
Define silence.
Still
At rest
Quiet
Are you tired of the constant noise surrounding you in our fast-paced society?
Silence is becoming more and more rare these days.
But have you ever stopped to appreciate the beauty of silence?
Silence can be incredibly important and shouldn’t be overlooked. My advice is to pay attention to it and explore how to make it part of your daily routine.
For wellbeing
Silence can hold immense value and benefits for our mental and emotional well-being.
Taking time to embrace silence can provide a space for reflection, introspection, and creativity.
It can also reduce stress and anxiety, promoting peace and calmness.
Being silent can help us be more mindful and present, leading to better engagement with our surroundings and experiences.
Including moments of silence in our daily routine can profoundly impact our quality of life.
Embracing silence, whether through meditation, mindfulness practices, or simply walking in nature, can deepen our connection with ourselves and the world around us.
Throughout my day, I make a conscious effort to embrace moments of peaceful stillness.
Being retired means I no longer have to endure the hustle and bustle of the workplace, and I relish the tranquillity that comes with it.
I walk multiple times daily to improve my health, using step count to motivate me. In the evening, after my main meal, I take at least 20 minutes to myself to be silent and at peace.
For communication
Silence can also improve our communication skills, but it’s often viewed as an awkward and uncomfortable pause in conversation.
However, when used intentionally, it can be a powerful tool for improving communication.
When someone expresses a complex idea, taking a moment of silence after they finish speaking can allow both parties to fully process what was said before responding.
This can lead to a more thoughtful and meaningful conversation.
Silence can be a valuable tool in communication when used intentionally and respectfully. It can foster deeper understanding, empathy, and respect between individuals.
Being silent, especially when the other person was expecting me to speak, was something I practised in my business when negotiating a sale. It’s a valuable technique, but at first, it is difficult to master, without feeling uncomfortable.
For support
Silence can be used to express empathy and show support.
Simply being present and listening in silence can be a powerful way to show support to someone going through a difficult time.
This can create a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or interruption.
Silence can communicate respect and honour cultural differences, especially in some cultures where it is valued as a sign of deference towards authority figures and elders.
When a situation makes it difficult to find the right words, I find a respectful silence can be the best way forward.
I recommend
There are many books about silence, but there are two that I recommend.
In Search of Silence by Rohan Narse — sadly out of print, but it was the most intriguing, compelling book I have ever read.
Silence: In the Age of Noise” by Erling Kagge — In this book, Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, emphasises and explains the importance of silence. The book is beautifully written, and it’s an interesting story — a calming and enjoyable read.
Silence is powerful; it’s free and effective.
