A brief story of the Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire was founded by Osman Ghazi in 1299. Throughout the following centuries, The Ottoman Empire expanded its borders towards the three-continent; Europe, Asia, and Africa. In this expansion, the conquest of Constantinople, which has been essential for many civilizations and a holy city for many religious beliefs, was the crucial point.
During the 16th century, Ottoman Empire increased its sovereignty over the Mediterranean. Even though its hegemony has relative damage in the following centuries, the Ottomans could manage to protect their impacts over the region until the 18th century.
Ottoman Empire governed many regions in Africa for a long time. Nowadays, countries such as include Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, were part of these governed territories.
The Ottomans were one of the crucial elements for ongoing trade in the Mediterranean. Trade partnership with the Ottoman Empire was the key to protect trade ships from their Corsairs.
Algeria that is on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea had been governed as an autonomous territory within the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century. Governor of Algeria that had been named as “Dayı”,
The USA wanted to trade in the Mediterranean Sea
The United States, a newly established state in the late 17th century, was willing to be part of Mediterranean trade which offered a lot of opportunities during the century. However, the government of the United State did not willing to agree with Ottoman sovereignty in the region.

As a result of this political movement, trade ships of the United States were targeted by Ottoman Corsairs. Many of them were captured with their flag. The pirates of the Ottoman started to capture many trade ships that carry the USA flag.
The USA wanted to resist the strength of the Ottoman Empire. Also, George Washington who is the founder president informed the USA Congress about the current developments in the Mediterranean Sea. George Washington demands extra funding from the Congress of the USA to struggle with Ottoman Corsairs.
Although the USA didn’t surrender, The state had to accept the regulations of the Ottomans for the trade. The USA appointed a delegation to make negotiations between the United States and the Ottoman Empire.
As a result, the United States agreed to pay the tribute to be part of the trade-in the Mediterranean Sea. But the USA had canceled the agreement and forced on pirates of Ottomans to trade freely in the Mediterranean sea until they had enough power to defeat corsairs to eliminate tribute.
