Urgent News: A Major Change in the Medium Payments Just Happened!

In case you missed the announcement, things are about to get real

Today, 10/22/19, Medium just announced they’ve done away with the pay-for-claps model, which has long been a toilet of an idea, since most readers have no idea how their claps effect our writing income.

As of October 28, 2019, we writers will now be paid for read time exclusively, which is meant to more-accurately represent the quality of our writing.

You’ll also get paid for non-subscriber reading time if the person subscribes within 30 days of reading your story (bonus!)

…and they’ll calculate our earning DAILY instead of Wednesdays-only, so you get a live representation of how your writing is doing, instead of having to guess.

Writers will now be paid as a portion of a reader’s monthly reading time.

If your work takes up 70% of a reader’s time, you’ll get 70% of that person’s payment allotment, whether or not they give a clap (see how I did that?).

Also, according to the FAQ document, it could take up TWO WEEKS to calculate a person’s read time, because it’s based on their allotment for the month… so no more real-time numbers in the stats.

This is really moving to the long-game, which will help with my daily obsession with stat-checking.

We’ll get daily earnings numbers, but those earnings could be for activity from two weeks ago.

This means your daily read numbers will have little (or nothing) to do with your actual ‘read’ income, because that’s from a couple weeks ago and all depends on the number of reads for a particular reader.

So, it seems like it just became impossible for us to predict our income in any fashion, but the process looks more fair on paper. Only time will tell.

I don’t know whether to expect an earnings increase or drop.

Clapping will help increase the visibility of your stories, however. The more people clap, the more the algorithm shows your work to more people, who will read more, and you get paid more.

I assume we’re about to see a lot more long content and mix of the short content— as writers navigate how all this works over the upcoming months.

This will turn everything upside-down for a minute, so hold on to your pencils and breathe. I know I’ve got some re-tooling to do, over here at the Book Mechanic.

Buckle your seat belts, kids.

I have no idea what to expect. I imagine some major fluctuations in income for the first little bit as we navigate our way through this new payment landscape.

I’ve been writing this change would come for a long time. I just had no idea it would come so soon. I figured it would be another year.

All the more reason to build your own tribe, sooner than later. Your Medium income is about to change overnight, hopefully for the best, but you never know.

It’s time to build your own tribe, like yesterday.
