Updated Editorial Guidelines For The Riff
Updated 17. December. 2023
The Riff is Medium’s premier publication for music. Our goal is to publish high-quality stories that help writers of all styles and appeal to readers worldwide.
However, as with anything, it occasionally needs some fine-tuning (heh).
That first item? Updated editorial guidelines.
The old guidelines still apply, so please take a minute to read those along with these new ones.
Here we go.
1. Submissions need to comply with all Medium policies
All work must abide by the platform’s Rules, Distribution Standards, Duplicate Content Policy, and Plagiarism standards.
2. We are no longer accepting work that has been previously published on Medium
Medium posts are ordered by date of original publication, not when they are submitted to The Riff. This means that older work appears much further down the page than a draft. It also means less views and less revenue for you. We want readers to see your work. The best way for that to happen is for it to be on or near the top of the page.
Please do not press the publish button and then submit your work. Instead, submit your work to us and we’ll publish it. This is in your interest as it increases your visibility on the platform.
If you are not already a writer on The Riff, you can click here to be added.
3. Titles must be in Title Case
If you are unsure if your title is formatted correctly, you can use a free site like this one.
Additionally, all subtitles and kickers need to be in subtitle case. Drop caps are not allowed.
4. Quotes
Pull quotes and block quotes must be used correctly. A pull quote should only be used to draw attention to text somewhere else within your story.
A quick tip:
- Your own words: Pull quote.
- Someone else’s: Block quote
5. Image credits
Only include images you are legally allowed to use. This keeps you and The Riff on the right side of Fair Use laws. It’s also part of Medium’s requirements listed above.
All images MUST be cited and include a link back to the source. If the photo is one of your own, crediting it as “photo by author,” or similar is acceptable. Any articles submitted without the correct citation(s), will be declined and turned back to the author.
I also want to be clear on what are— and what are not acceptable citations. Simply writing “YouTube” or a site you may have pulled an image from is not enough.
When in doubt, use the artist’s record label. You can almost always find those on Wikipedia.
6. Edit your work prior to submission
It’s one thing if we have to edit a few minor changes such as adding a comma or changing the format to make something a header. We’re happy to help you with that.
Full-line edits are something we do not do. Submissions with excessive errors will be declined and returned to you. If needed, review Medium’s formatting guidelines before submitting your work, and please take the time to run your article through Grammarly, Hemingway, or a similar program.
The Private Note function does not allow room for a lot of feedback, so please understand that explanations may be briefer than we would prefer.
Plenty of you have grown and become better writers while writing on The Riff. That relationship is mutually beneficial. With that in mind, we are looking for writing that meets these new standards.
7. Tag bombing
The Riff has always been a place of community for many, and tag bombing has had its place to remind others that you published a story or even as a way of saying hi to everyone.
There are many reasons why tag bombing is done, and we understand why you do it.
That said, Medium has cracked down on tag bombing and regularly receives complaints about it from readers. Work with excessive tag bombs is not eligible for Medium’s new boost program, let alone curation.
To make sure that you have a higher chance of getting boosted and curated, we are no longer accepting stories that tag bomb, effective immediately.
8. Only one Call-To-Action is allowed
One call-to-action (CTA) is acceptable. These should be reasonable in nature, and benefit the reader. Any CTA must be at the end of the article. Any requests for things like “follow for follow,” will be removed.
Note: Medium’s built-in tip feature does not count against the cap.
9. Excessive profanity
Cursing once is okay, you can get away with it. But with Medium being stricter on quality these days, cursing is something that’ll hurt your chances of being boosted or curated and it gives a nasty look to The Riff.
We get it, there’s been a lot of cursing in The Riff’s history. The Riff is always evolving, though, and this is part of our evolution.
10. No porn
This is a section we never thought would be necessary, but here we are.
Do not submit anything that is pornography. Mentioning it in the retelling of a story or relating it to music is one thing. Sexually explicit articles are an entirely different story.
We are not PornHub.
Thank you for being loyal and growing with us! Please invite your friends to read and write for The Riff, and feel free to reach out with any questions you have in the comments or via a private note.
Let’s keep on rockin’ and rollin’.
~Noah, Kevin and Rob
