The Masks We Wear: A look into the metaphorical masks we wear every day, not just on Halloween

In a world that spins like a gyroscope, We wear masks, a wardrobe kaleidoscope. From dawn to dusk, we switch them out — Expressions of what we’re truly about?

In the morning mirror, the first mask greets, “Hello, Good-Looking,” to start the tweets. But vanity’s veil barely covers the skin, When deep within, a narrative begins.

As you step out, another mask’s deployed, The “Professional” in your office asteroid. Charts and graphs, emails, conference calls, Behind that mask, a persona installs.

On social media, it’s another tale, “Life’s Perfect,” says the digital veil. Yet, behind the likes, hashtags, and follows, Lurk insecurities that no filter can hollow.

Then comes “The Lover,” oh so tender, A mask we wear but hardly remember. In stolen moments and hidden glances, This mask allows for romantic chances.

Not to forget “The Joker,” the mask of wit, Spreading laughter, but alone, might sit. Behind that grin and those comedic vibes, Often a solitude that no jest describes.

Ah, “The Stoic,” the mask so grand, Hides the feelings we don’t understand. It masquerades as calm, cool, and collected, While deep inside, emotions lay rejected.

As dusk arrives, the masks start to wane, In nightly solitude, we face the chain. The masks are off; it’s just you and the moon, But even then, a mask hums a lonesome tune.

For the last mask, perhaps the most divine, Is “The True Self,” that rarely gets to shine. It hides beneath the layers of other faces, Waiting for the moment it finally embraces.

Why do we wear these facades each day? A complicated question with no easy say. But maybe it’s time, in this masquerade, To let some truth in the parts we’ve played.

Masks upon masks, like an onion’s peel, Each one part of how we truly feel. But when all’s stripped, in that mirror stare, Who are we really, when nothing’s there?

Authors Insights

Dear Reader, have you ever felt like you’re juggling a dozen different roles in the circus of life? Ah, I penned “The Masks We Wear” to explore this very human conundrum.

We all wear masks, don’t we? From the “Good-Looking” one we put on for selfies to the “Professional” we don for the 9-to-5 grind. But what’s beneath them? Is it another mask or perhaps a glimpse of our true selves? I wanted to delve into this labyrinth of identity, where each mask is a chapter in our unwritten autobiography.

So, what mask are you wearing right now as you read this? The “Intellectual,” perhaps? The poem is a mirror, reflecting not just the masks but the faces behind them.

It’s a call to acknowledge our complexities, our vulnerabilities, and, yes, our authentic selves. It’s a journey through a day but also through a lifetime. And it leaves you with a question: when the masks come off, who are you? Ah, but that’s a question only you can answer. So, shall we unmask?

End Note:

Your support means the world to me and allows me to bring more impactful verses into your life. Stay tuned for more captivating narratives, and feel free to dive into my other poems below.

Until then, may your masks only serve to reveal the true beauty within you.
