Unsung Heroes
Don’t Let Them Get Lost in the Shuffle
Recently, the town we live in experienced a shooting episode at a local park. The news has been rife with stories, observations, and opinions — as to be expected.
What struck me was the lack of interest in a few pieces of news that got lost in the shuffle. These are important, as they give us hope and understanding when we may feel that life is nothing but calamity and catastrophe.
While the above-mentioned shooting was happening, a group of special needs students just happened to be close by. The local art association opened its doors to these kids. They were handed paper and crayons and were allowed to sit on the floor and make art. An oasis in the middle of chaos for the students and others who took shelter in the building.
I don’t know if there was a policy in place, or if this was spur of the moment goodness — but it happened, and I want to recognize the beauty in this.
We go through life hoping that horrific things only happen to other people, if they happen at all. Unfortunately, that’s not the way things work today. You can have all the policy, procedure, and rehearsals in the world, but life still happens.
I pray it doesn’t happen to you, but if it does, I hope the stories of the unsung heroes will catch your eye or ear and give you hope. Kindness always wins, yet rarely makes headlines.
Search it out, hold tight, and let it lead you back to the light.
