“Ever noticed how peculiar Mr. Smith is?” Jake mused, leaning over the fence.

His neighbour, a figure of myth cloaked in the mundane, tended his roses with care that belied his monstrous heritage.

“He’s just unique,” replied Martha, her eyes dancing with unspoken knowledge. Inside, Mr. Smith chuckled, his large, gnarled fingers delicately avoiding thorns.

The description of a famous monster living with everyone had never been so apt.

“They’ve no idea,” he thought, a smile creeping into his voice, “about the magic hidden in plain sight.”

His presence is a gentle reminder that extraordinary secrets dwell in ordinary places.
