Unplugging from the Matrix: The Paradox of Modern Existence And The Search For Authenticity

Our life is predetermined and meticulously organized, designed to be as scientific, unbiased, and provable as possible. Yet, many of us experience exhaustion and burnout because we are unaware that we are not living our authentic lives.

It’s been years since I decided to disconnect from modern society and live off the grid in Spain.

Despite the challenges and discomforts, I have come to love this way of life.

Being surrounded by nature and having full control over my time and choices is truly irreplaceable.

I chose to leave the confines of modern society, often referred to as “the matrix,” because living within its constraints is essentially living in a world of illusions and delusions that rely on the system.

As you become dependent on it, you also begin to conform and accept this way of life within the matrix.

Which leads to an inauthentic life.

You may resist this way of life, just as I did. Because it goes against our natural human nature— being consumed by work, bills, and the rat race while being addicted to technology, shopping, and other distractions.

Eventually, it will leave you feeling exhausted, frustrated, or even physically ill.

That is why I found solace in philosophy, specifically phenomenology. It all clicked for me and helped me understand why I was feeling overwhelmed and exhausted — it was burnout.

In this article, I aim to show that it is not your fault; rather, it is the system that pushes us towards insanity. Many ideas presented here are translated from the podcast by Ph.D.Anna Hogenova.

“We are all searching to find the place in today’s world, but we often find ourselves struggling and falling into difficult situations, leaving us unsure of how to move forward. “ says the Czech philosopher Anna Hogenová, not excluding herself from this.

She believes that the act of searching is a characteristic of us modern humans who are trying to discover our true selves. If this search is sincere, we eventually find what we are seeking.

Despite this, some people hold onto the belief that they can discover their true selves through wealth or by following techniques outlined in some self-help literature, attending seminars, or taking classes.

However, life is not something that can be easily figured out just with money or books.

Life is about something much more than techniques.

Techniques are part of the “Das Gestell phenomenon”. It is nothing else than The Matrix, the popular movie.

Many people are unaware of the Das Gestell phenomenon.

Mrs. Hogenova explains that we are all trapped in a predetermined path, living our lives according to some invisible measuring system known as Das Gestell. It’s a concept that she often references and uses to describe the limitations of our modern existence.

The “das Gestell” phenomenon has created a fabricated standard for everything, as shown by the global proliferation of advertisements for goods and services, where dishonesty is sometimes accepted and normalized.

This has hurt society’s overall values and morals as we are seeing today.

It is because our society is dominated by Cartesian principles, where logic and rational thought are dominated.

We live in a time where quantitative reasoning has permeated every aspect of our lives.

In this fast-paced world, it is crucial for us to constantly readjust ourselves to fit into society.

However, this can lead to a state of emotional exhaustion and detachment from one’s true self.

Many are not even aware that they are living a life that does not align with their authentic desires. And this inauthentic life is causing them to push aside their inner feelings, never reflecting, or addressing the issues.

Because “that is the way of life today,” they say.

That is why we have so many mental health problems.

There is only one thing Anna recommends. It is disconnecting from the Matrix through meditation.

She avoids mentioning the meditation practice of stillness and clearing the mind.

No.

Anna describes this meditation as a conversation with yourself that should bring you profound peace. But that peace is never created just by some technique:

Man is immersed in the world, man and the world enter into a conversation, because man is nothing but a conversation even when he sleeps.

This conversation has to be real, we say authentic, and then that conversation is what the ancient Greeks called soul care.

But today we are predestined for some pre-calculated life which cuts us off from our feelings and that is why end up exhausted.

As you see feeling burnout is not your fault, and you don’t have to completely disconnect from the world and move like I did off the grid.

No.

However, it’s important to disconnect from the typical lifestyle of today’s society and technology.

How?

Just be aware of your environment, and your daily activities. You should find a few moments each day to unplug from technology and other distractions and spend some time alone with yourself or in nature.
