Unmatched Strength
I Am Woman Hear Me Roar — Girl Power

Monday’s Prompt: In what situations have you let your power slip away? How can you reclaim that power?
When I hear the word power, my conditioned programming automatically thinks of dominance, which I then associate with traditional masculinity. In honor of International Women’s Day, and for the purpose of this piece, occasionally I will replace the word power with the word strength.
Past and present, women have had to fight for our status in our male dominated societies. Women have used their innate strength to fight and empower other women. Occasionally, we have felt defeated, but our unwavering determination prevents us from permanently quitting. And with that will power, that ingrained strength, many have shown up every day to keep fighting for what they believe in. And therefore, I will declare that the strength of a woman is unmatched.
Have I let my power slip away?
I am sure you have heard the quote “whatever does not kill you can only make you stronger”. Absolutely, I have lost my strength, that determination to fight, and I have also surrendered my power. I, like many women, have sacrificed our strength in an effort to survive in a system that forces us to compromise and lower our worth. For most of us who work or have worked in corporate America, that has been a constant battle.
Those experiences were stifling and sometimes demeaning, but I am grateful because they helped to build my mental strength. For many women, those experiences failed to break us, instead they made us stronger and increased our will to fight harder.
“You strike the woman, you strike the rock.” — African Proverb
I think a woman’s superpower is the strength she possesses, a characteristic that was ingrained in her from birth. Let me tell you a quick story.
Recently, I almost lost my power to a 6-year-old child (a family member). This child exuded so much confidence and has mastered the art of negotiation. She was able to convince me to rework my day to fit into her schedule. She wanted to maximize her time, her words not mine.
This relentless little human understands the power that she possesses and used her innate feminine strength to bend the world to her needs. The only way I gained back my power was to stop engaging with her and moved my discussion to the adult (her mom), who was able to use her power to control the outcome.
The fact that this tiny human was so aware of her abilities was something to be admired. She will one day for sure become a force of nature.

Power can be easily used to achieve desired outcomes. And feminine power will always remain a force in this world. “Behind every good man there is a strong woman and behind every strong woman there is a force of even stronger women.” Either way you flip the coin, women are innately strong, and our strength or power is unequivocally unmatched.
