United Nations Mulls to Adopt Arms Embargo on Myanmar
Draft non-binding resolution is put to consider
The proposal of the draft resolution is brought into highlight when several non-state actors, agencies and countries has been calling for comprehensive arms embargo against Myanmar. The proposal of arms embargo has been brought at such moment when the junta has been battling with anti-coup resistances across Myanmar.
The United Nations General Assembly is going to put forward the draft resolution in plenary meeting on May 18 for suspension of the transfer of weapon of Myanmar.
The proposal of the draft resolution is introduced by Liechtenstein. The proposal received support of sponsors from forty eight countries, including the European Union, the USA, the UK. However, among those countries, South Korea is the only country belong to Asia.
The wordings of the draft convene proposal for suspension of supply, sale and transfer of all kinds of weapons and military gadgets to Myanmar. The suspension calls for both direct and indirect kinds of weapon supply.
A conspicuous feature of the proposal is that it has not put the word ‘coup’ in the draft. The military junta took control of Myanmar on February of 2021 and since then the junta has been committing crime against the common people of Myanmar. So, there exist ambiguities how would such arms embargo affect the junta regime of Myanmar.
The resolution of the General Assembly does not have any binding force. Nevertheless, the resolution has political significance. It is pertinent to mention here that South Korea is the only Asian country that supports the non-binding draft resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. Therefore, it is difficult to assume how much affective the arms embargo will be against Myanmar.
