(Unique) (White) (Far-Right) American Kindness
A poetic field guide to the specimen in its current state
They will have baggies in their car Of food, a rain poncho, some advil To give to the homeless man in the median if they have to stop at the light
They will have a pat on the back For the brown kid on their youth soccer team For the local girl who did good on her math test
They will wear Be Kind Choose Kindness Live Kind T-shirts And hang wordy folksy things in their homes about being kind, about live laugh love, about glitter
They will join Kindness groups online that only have one rule No political talk please! No negativity please!
They will listen to Oprah They will volunteer at a food bank They will donate some to charity
And then
They will vote for Trump They will vote Republican
And not connect a single dot
Between how maybe it is not live laugh love to lock up babies maybe it is not kindness is free throw it around like confetti to support more and more cuts to health care
And maybe the real kindness and the real solution might be
to provide homeless folks with homes, jobs, social workers, and to fight for policies that solve the problems not just give them a bag of granola bars and goldfish crackers and then drive off in your SUV
They will think of themselves as kind, even Christian!, they will think of themselves as good They will not hear of it any other way
And if you point it out They will remove you from the Kindness club for being political
Because, as they say, anyone can be kind regardless of political affiliation, Which is far right white american kindness speak for:
kindly be quiet and let us think we are good people They do not want to think about the vast gap between what they wear on their t-shirts and what they support in the voting booth
