Summary

The website content reflects on the theme of unhappiness in marriage, suggesting that it can be better to get divorced than to remain in an unhappy union, as inspired by a misunderstanding during a six-word photo story challenge.

Abstract

The author of the content shares a personal story about the realization of unhappiness in their marriage. While brainstorming ideas for a November photo story challenge centered on happiness, the author's boyfriend, who misheard the theme as "unhappiness," inadvertently provided a poignant six-word story: "Sometimes it’s better to get divorced." This statement resonated with the author, prompting introspection during a solo trip to the Canadian Rockies, where the grayness of the lake mirrored their internal state. The author acknowledges the tendency to cling to marriages beyond the point of personal happiness, and the narrative concludes with the author's acknowledgment of their own marital unhappiness, hinting at the liberating decision to end their marriage.

Six Word Photo Story: Freestyle

Sometimes it’s better to get divorced.

When I was brainstorming for November’s six word photo story challenge on happiness, I asked my boyfriend for some ideas. He misheard me and thought I said “unhappiness”. He said these six words and I thought I would turn the idea on its head.

We often hang onto our marriages longer than we should even if we aren’t happy. These six words rang true for us both. When I looked upon the gray lake in the Canadian Rockies on a solo trip at the end of my marriage, I realized how unhappy I was.
