As I’m sure you are aware, positioning yourself as a leader can be very beneficial. This will make your work more meaningful and advance your career. Influence can be gained based on your title, or on knowledge and the skills you already possess.

Although it could take years to climb the ladder up into senior management, discovering your personal strengths is something you can start doing right now. Learning how to use your current assets will build up your clout in the workplace.

Using Your Knowledge to Position Yourself as a Leader

1. Decide to read daily. Start reading or rereading books about business advice or any topic that interests you. The more you read, the better prepared you’ll be to contribute to any discussion. You’ll sound like a leader whether you’re engaging in small talk or discussing the latest goals with your team.

2. Sign up for training. Are you taking advantage of programs your employer offers? Maybe you can knock the dust off of your high school Spanish or become reacquainted with the latest software update.

3. Internet surfing during breaks? Yes! Those minutes you spend on hold or chilling between meetings can be put to good use. Whip out your phone and search for your latest industry news. Don’t you think you’ll stand out if you’re the first one to notice a major lawsuit or merger?

4. Take a course. Did you know that many adults juggle full-time jobs while going back to school? Check online and schedule an appointment at your local university/community college to see what you need to complete your degree. Or, just take a class that interests you.

5. Are you consulting with experts? Contact others in your network who would be willing to share their wisdom and knowledge. Interview a colleague who has published a new book and promote his or her work on your personal blog. You’ll both benefit from increased information and publicity.

6. Shadow a star employee. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, a high performer may be pleased to show you the ropes. Let them know that you admire their style. Offer to assist them with specific tasks so you can learn from their example.
