Unexpected Benefits of Online Shopping
How a switch to shopping online has saved me time and money during the pandemic
How many times did you buy something on the spur of the moment and then later felt guilty about it? As a shopper, you are probably familiar with a concept of impulse buying, and probably at some point in your life have experienced it.
When we shop in a store, temptations are everywhere — ranging from slashed sale prices to products displayed in cute wrappers and packages that are hard to resist.
I used to be a victim of impulse purchases when I did my shopping in stores. But I think since I started shopping online, the trend has reversed — at least for me.
Before the shelter-in-place orders were put in place, I had never purchased anything online. I always preferred shopping in stores. However, for the last three months, I’ve been doing most of my shopping online. Except for food and groceries that my husband buys at supermarkets, I order household products and supplies online through outlets such as Walmart and Amazon. And now with online shopping, I’ve started seeing tangible benefits.
Here are the benefits of online shopping:
You can cut down on your expenses
Since I started shopping online, I was able to cut down my monthly expenses almost in half. And I attribute this to one major factor — smarter shopping.
With me not going and doing shopping physically in stores, my temptation in impulse buying has drastically decreased.
Now when I order online, I purchase things out of necessity rather than splurge on things I do not need.
With a family of four, every penny we spend counts. Since I’ve been shopping and placing orders in the comfort of my home, I am more aware of what I and my family need and what we do not. I can look around the house and get a mental picture of what household items and products to stock up on. And since I started doing that, my purchases became more planned and thought out, rather than made on the spur of the moment so common when shopping in stores.
Not only have I been able to save money from unnecessary purchases, but I also started seeing other benefits of online shopping.
You can choose the best products for the lowest prices
Shopping online allows me to compare prices more precisely and select the best deals for products.
One of my favorite online outlets is Walmart. With shopping at Walmart, you can get free shipping with a purchase of $35 and more. If you are a smart shopper, for that money, you can pretty much get all your household essentials. Also, most of the stuff I buy I pick up from Clearance sections, which gives me an additional discount. Even with clothing, I can get some seasonal items on sale at 50% off and higher.
You can read the product reviews and compare the quality of products
Reading about product reviews online on your laptop in the comfort of your home is easy and convenient — which is not an option when shopping in stores. This allows you to select the products with the best reviews at the lowest prices.
It is safer for you and your family if you have kids
Having two children means every time we bring them to the store, we can potentially expose them to the Covid-19 virus. Constantly wearing and walking around with a mask can be a nuisance. Also, following all social distancing rules and regulations, can make your shopping miserable. After all, shopping should be a relaxing and pleasant experience and not feel like an ordeal.
It is convenient; it saves you time, energy, and gas
Shopping in stores can be time-consuming. Since I switched to shopping online, I don’t have to spend extra time going to the store. For instance, I don’t have to ask my husband to drive me to Walmart and waste his time and gas.
Since online shopping saves time, it means now I have more time to engage and focus on other things that matter to me — things like writing.
Shopping online for three months in a row has worked remarkably well for me as far as quality and affordability of products I can order. The only caveat is that the selection of products that you order with free delivery is limited. But since I am a minimalist and not too picky of a shopper, I find most of the things I need at an optimal price.
Overall, the transition to online shopping has been a great experience for me. I had no idea how easy and convenient it was until I tried. Shopping from home means you can be a smarter shopper, and smart shopping translates to saving your money in the long-term.
If you have been trying to save up time and money, as well as stay safe during the pandemic, do give online shopping a try.
