Underneath It All
A Pandemic Poem
Underneath it all there is hope At least I hope there is It’s hard to know what part of me is hopeful and what part is unrealistic in the shadow of a virus
It’s strange when social distancing suits you so well, but is a prescription for others to stay safe I think it’s just the fear that is getting to me from that last bus ride or that trip to CVS or the cough or sneeze I overheard in public two weeks ago and thought nothing of
Inside it all there is panic and confusion because we don’t live in a country that can universally agree on anything, much less how to respond to a pandemic with lawmakers downgrading science to experimental extrapolation and wearing gas masks as a joke (until they are quarantined) It just makes us look silly and ironic, not in a good way, that as much as this spreading illness should bring us together it’s only breaking us apart into tiny particles all huddling together in their nook hoping for widespread answers to our questions
On the surface of it all is pandemonium which doesn’t help stress or immune systems and it’s hard to tell your kids and friends to stay inside when there is no mandate and each state is free to take precautions the way their state leadership feels is necessary so we have 50 states all acting independently and we wonder why there is no continuity in relief and care efforts so we sit inside and wait for it to pass but schools are closing from two weeks to the end of summer and some are still open because it’s not obvious that this is a big deal, even in a state with a couple of cases of coronavirus present, now
We are a country divided about an illness that knows no political affiliation or prejudice or ideology at all It just wants to spread its wings into us and we are all sitting around arguing about how real it is, or that’s what we were doing and now we are just hoping to flatten the curve with those same hopes and dreams that were used for school shootings because we were unprepared and unrepentant and now each day we see a little more reality seep into the political discourse of the nation while our local governments flail to save us because no one will step up and save them
