Summary

Underlined, a publishing imprint focused on young adult (YA) literature, was acquired by Penguin Random House and relaunched with a new website and a line of books catering to the demand for fast content delivery in the teen market.

Abstract

Underlined, originally an independent entity, has been integrated into the Penguin Random House family, specifically targeting young adult readers with its offerings. The acquisition aimed to leverage the trend of immediate content consumption prevalent in streaming culture by providing regular, affordable, and engaging reads under the Underlined brand. In May 2017, Penguin Random House teased the relaunch of the Underlined website with a giveaway, and by March 2020, they had announced a new line of books that would be released on a consistent schedule. Beverly Horowitz, Senior Vice President & Publisher at Delacorte Press, emphasized the intent to deliver highly commercial content, including thrillers, horror stories, and romances, to the market rapidly.

Underlined was owned by someone who no longer exists because they were bought out by none other than Penguin Random House. Specifically, Underlined caters to the YA crowd.

Penguin Random House Teases New “Underlined” Website With Giveaway was published in May 2017. This press release by Random House in March 2020 states that they are:

Watching how our streaming culture has increased the expectation for fast delivery of content, we wanted to reach teens in a similar way, says Horowitz. Our new line of Underlined books will be published on a rapid, regular schedule, delivering highly-commercial, portable, and affordable reads under the recognizable and trusted Underlined brand.

The release goes on to say, “We are proud to be bringing these compulsively readable thrillers, horror stories, and romances to readers, and look forward to introducing them to the marketplace.”

Horowitz as in by Beverly Horowitz, Senior Vice President & Publisher, Delacorte Press, that is.

YA isn’t my thing, but if it’s your wheelhouse I’d say at least check them out.

I do the legwork so you don’t have to!
