Uncover the Secrets of Inner Peace with the Four Agreements

A reflective journey into the learnings from the book, The Four Agreements.

Infograph created by author

As I dove into the pages of Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, ‘The Four Agreements’, little did I know that it would resonate so much that it’d feel like a lot of my values are summed up in four principles to guide my life’s journey.

This book profoundly impacted me and gave me words to express many of my feelings at that time I first read it. It also helped me be aware of some of my values.

Today, I wish to share with you, the wisdom I gained from these four agreements and some reflecting questions to help you revolutionize your life.

Agreement 1: Be Impeccable with Your Word

The word is not just a sound or a written symbol. The word is a force; it is the power you have to express and communicate, to think, and thereby it create the events in your life. You can speak. What other animal on the planet can speak?

This agreement had me re-evaluating the power of words.

Before reading this book, I had not realized that choosing words isn’t just about enhancing conversations; it is about quieting the mind chatter.

It taught me to be present, to listen more than speak, and to connect more deeply with others.

Reflection:

How do you practice speaking with integrity in your everyday life?

Have you noticed any changes in your relationships when you choose your words more carefully?

Agreement 2: Don’t Take Anything Personally

I learned to keep myself insulated from others’ opinions, thanks to the countless judgments I faced early in my life. This agreement however, reinforced that sentiment.

It reminded me of the importance of valuing myself and not allowing anyone else’s perceptions to shape my self-worth.

This agreement has equipped me with the resilience to navigate through challenging situations.

Reflection:

How do you handle situations where you feel personally attacked or criticized?

Think of strategies to separate ourselves from the opinions of others and cultivate a stronger sense of self-worth.

Agreement 3: Don’t Make Assumptions

This agreement was a game-changer.

It made me realize how assumptions can wreak havoc on our relationships.

It encouraged me to ask questions, seek clarity, and communicate effectively.

This shift in focus cleared up many misunderstandings and fortuitously strengthened my relationships.

Reflection:

Have you ever experienced the negative consequences of making assumptions?

How can we navigate through misunderstandings and foster better communication?

I invite you to share your insights and let’s learn from each other.

Agreement 4: Always Do Your Best

The last agreement went beyond the conventional understanding of striving for success.

It reminded me to value self-care, to be patient with myself, and to remember that ‘my best’ can vary from day to day.

Doing my best now encompasses every aspect of my life, from work to relationships to personal well-being.

Reflection:

What does doing your best mean to you?

How do you balance self-care and striving for excellence without falling into the trap of perfectionism?

Explore ways to embrace progress over perfection.

This journey with ‘The Four Agreements’ has been enlightening, invigorating, and transformative.

Go through these agreements, uncover their profound impact on your lives.

I invite you to try the path that takes you towards self-reflection, self-growth, and action.
