The Havanun Tales #17

Umburubumbu

The eyes of the Earth

Umburubumbu is the spirit of the puddles.

Umburubumbu when it rains, he is allowed to emerge from the darkness of the subsoil and plays with water.

He is happy with the frogs, the dragonflies, of the little birds that come to wash their feathers. He is happy to soften the earth, children chatting and chasing each other.

Umburubumbu he is not a spirit to be afraid of.

Hands on hips are scarier, Mom’s stormy flowered apron when you come home late and the evening is sweet and your shoes are all dirty with mud.

Umburubumbu when the sun insists, slowly returns to the earth and green grass grows out of the puddle.

Puddles can be complicated worlds but they don’t want to be mysterious.

Umburubumbu all excited runs from the spirits of the dark to tell the stories he has heard on the surface, to paint the vivid, sparkling frescoes that he could see.

And the spirits of the dark are listening to him with large white ears.

Puddles are the eyes of the Earth in love with the Universe.

After the rain, Anna takes the pictures, she also makes her little brother snap them. Father Oscar talks about umbrellas that don’t open, and speaks of Umburubumbu.

After the rain, Dorothy whispered to me long ago:

Everyone thinks Umburubumbu is a little spirit, but we here in Havanun know that he is only modest.

After the rain, Dorothy whispered to me long ago:

Puddles are the eyes of the Earth in love with the Universe.

And the whole ocean for Umburubumbu it is nothing but a large blue fascinating puddle.
