Summary

The UK government has announced a policy to welcome tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees, allowing them to live in the UK for three years, which could help alleviate staff shortages exacerbated by Brexit and the pandemic.

Abstract

The UK is set to receive a significant number of Ukrainian refugees amidst ongoing staff shortages intensified by Brexit and the pandemic. The government's initial hesitance in addressing the refugee crisis was met with criticism, but it has since confirmed that Ukrainians will be permitted to reside in the UK for a three-year period. This move is expected to bolster the workforce and aid in the recovery of sectors like hospitality, which have been severely impacted. The UK's swift lifting of COVID restrictions is also seen as a strategy to revive the economy and improve Boris Johnson's reputation, who has faced accusations of dictatorial behavior. The public response has been overwhelming, with over a hundred thousand Brits offering to host refugees, including notable figures like Matt Hancock.

Opinions

  • The UK's readiness for Brexit was challenged by the pandemic, leading to a significant exodus of young working-class people from various European countries.
  • The hospitality sector faced a potential collapse due to staff shortages, but the UK's early lifting of COVID restrictions paved the way for economic recovery.
  • The government's policy shift to welcome Ukrainian refugees

Ukrainian Refugees Finally Going to the UK

Ukrainian Protest in London by Karlo Tasler

The UK was ready for the Brexit, but not in the combination with the pandemic. Ukrainians might save the day.

Since the beginning of the lockdown mania, more than a million people have left the United Kingdom. Many of the young working-class people from Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania… Since Brexit was introduced just before the pandemic, many of those people lost the chance to come back to the UK.

Due to staff shortages, many sectors have been struggling, including the hospitality sector. At one point, it really seemed that might be the end of the hospitality sector as we know it, and that only big restaurant and pub chains would survive. However, as the UK is now on its own, it didn’t need to bother with guidelines from Brussels anymore, so it lifted the COVID restrictions before any other European country and the recovery strategy could have begun.

“Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees could come to the UK,” the government yesterday announced after they were initially criticized for the ineffective policy towards the refugee crisis. Michael Gove, the leveling up secretary (I don’t have a clue what that means) confirmed unlimited numbers of Ukrainians will be allowed to live in the UK for three years. More than a hundred thousand Brits registered to host a refugee within the first day of launching the scheme. Even good old Matt Hancock registered one of his rooms.

Ukrainians will be the new British workforce

In the times when Boris Johnson has been called a dictator by various groups of people for various reasons, he stood against the actual dictator, sanctioned Roman Abramovich, and took care of Ukrainian refugees. The economy will survive! Boris’ reputation will survive.

I don’t need to mention that from Friday all the COVID traveling restrictions will be lifted. No more tests. Not for vaccinated or unvaccinated. No more isolation. No more locator forms. No more granny killers. No nothing

Ukrainians, welcome to the free land of the UK.

(Yeah… right).
