How Ukrainian Border Patrol Dogs Received Body Armor Provided by the US
The four-legged canine unit sharp-suited with the brand new bulletproof vests seems ready for action
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) reported the delivery of a batch of bulletproof vests for service dogs from police dog trainers in the United States on Tuesday, May 3.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs also released a statement about this shipment of protective gear.
The K9 body armor does not interfere with movement and protects the dog from debris, firearms, melee weapons, and shrapnel. Hence, these bulletproof vests are intended for dogs that will be deployed in hazardous areas.
The SBGS engages in a wide variety of activities and addresses a wide range of national and international dangers, according to Serhii Serdiuk, Deputy Director of SBGS.
This is not the first time Ukrainian canine units have received body armor. Last year, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine handed over specialized equipment to support the canine units of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) at an official ceremony held in Kyiv on 19 August 2021.
Canine trailers with field kennels and harnesses with leashes were among the given items. The equipment will aid the SBGS in its employment of dogs to combat illicit trafficking in weapons, ammunition, and explosives (WAE) at border crossing points and along specific stretches of the state’s border.
Concluding remarks
The OSCE has provided equipment to Ukraine’s border guards’ canine force to prevent the illicit trafficking of guns, ammunition, and explosives.
The four-legged operatives often perform tasks as dangerous as those faced by the military, requiring reliable protective equipment.
