Summary

Two House Republican seats will be filled in special elections, with candidates facing unique challenges.

Abstract

Two House Republicans, Kevin McCarthy and George Santos, are leaving their seats in Congress, and special elections will be held to replace them. California Assemblyman Vince Fong is running for McCarthy's seat, but he is ineligible to run for Congress due to state law. In New York, the House voted to expel George Santos, and a special election will be held in mid-February 2024. New York Republicans have chosen a registered Democrat, Mazi Melesa Pilip, to be their nominee in the race.

Republicans want to hold the seats.

Two people who recently left the U.S. House of Representatives were in the news consistently for weeks. Kevin McCarthy had been the Republican Speaker of the House for ten months until he was ousted at the hands of Matt Gaetz and seven other Republicans. Then he announced that he would leave the House and not run for reelection.

The other Republican recently removed was George Santos. He was elected from New York in the 2022 election. He was embroiled in controversy ever since that time when it was discovered that he had lied repeatedly about his life, his family, and his experiences.

McCarthy and Santos will be replaced in Congress. Elections will be held with candidates lining up for the seats.

California Assemblyman Vince Fong is a Republican who previously worked for McCarthy. He was the chosen one after another candidate stepped down. Now Fong is declared ineligible to run for Congress in 2024 by the California Secretary of State because state law prohibits any candidate from filing nomination papers for more than one office at the same election. Fong is already on the ballot for his Assembly reelection. Fong is still trying to run for Congress.

A story by Madison Hall for Insider was titled: “The candidate NY Republicans chose to replace George Santos has been a registered Democrat for more than a decade.”

The House voted to expel Rep. George Santos from Congress on December 1.

An election to fill his vacant seat will be held in mid-February 2024.

New York Republicans have tapped a registered Democrat to be their nominee in the race.

New York Republicans have decided on their nominee to run in a special election to replace ousted Rep. George Santos: a registered Democrat.

The GOP’s nomination for Mazi Melesa Pilip, an Ethiopian-born Jew, Israeli Defense Force veteran, and member of the Nassau County Legislature will officially be announced Friday.

While Pilip previously ran for a seat in the county legislature as a Republican — and still professes to be one — Politico revealed earlier in December that she’s registered to vote as a Democrat.

The special election to fill Santos’ vacant seat will be held on February 13, 2024.

Those two House seats are up for grabs at this point. It will be interesting to see who prevails in the elections.
