Two Interesting Character Traits You Can Recognize In People Watching TV
What is your favorite?
When I was a child, my mother was working full-time, and I used to spend the afternoon at my grandparents’ house. We were all watching tv together, and in those long hours, I enjoyed studying their behavior and analyzing their different personalities, more than watching tv.
My grandmother was a simple woman from the south of Italy, she loved cooking and enjoyed good food, therefore she was quite fat. I loved to hug her because she was so warm and big. Watching television had a special effect on her, which may have added to the consequences of a big lunch. As soon as she sat on the sofa, she fell asleep. She couldn’t even watch the first minutes of the movie or news; it had a hypnotic affect. Sometimes she snored, and I became angry at her because I thought she should eat less food, go to sleep in her bedroom, or be interested in her family and all the incredible stories the world was showing us.
My grandfather, on the contrary, had serious health problems, so he was sitting in a wheelchair and most of the times he could not stand, but when there was something that really made him angry, he used to stand up and shout something like “You are all thieves!” Then he fell on his chair, exhausted. “That’s how a real man should react”, I thought. He showed he had some strength and energy. I admired him.
He even shouted against the remote control that he blamed for every technical problem. During these moments, my grandmother kept sleeping. She used to wake up after about one hour, and ask: “Why did you change the channel?” As if she had been interested in what was going on.
Things were more complicated on Sundays or on Christmas day since there were more people sleeping on the sofa: my uncle and my grandmother. Their snoring sound was like an orchestra concert. There was also another group, made up of people who were shouting against the tv. Everyone had a different opinion and then they started arguing.
Years later, even when we had two television sets, it was just the same: someone was talking to the tv, somebody else was tired and fell asleep.
My family is full of energy. Even now, when the news start and I think: “I can finally listen to what’s going on in the world”, someone expresses his unsolicited advice: “Of course we are in this situation!” I know I could watch tv alone, but I find it is one of the rare moments in a day in which we are all together. I got so used to not being able to watch a movie, that I soon lost my interest in every show. I sometimes fall asleep on the sofa, like my grandmother, other times I speak in a loud voice and reply to someone speaking on tv, like my grandfather.
Another story takes place during important football matches. There are ceremonies and rituals that can’t be modified, including the type of food and drinks which are being served, the group of people watching the match, and their seats on the sofa. In these moments, nobody in the family may speak, or you might be blamed for being a bad luck charm.
Considering it all, I prefer reading a book.
