Questions are often asked about starting your own business.

Here are just a couple of ways to get your mental conversation started.

Why would I start my own business?

There are many reasons, and the list that follows is based on my experience; yours may be different.

  • Why work for someone who doesn’t know what I know?
  • Why work for someone who treats others like a necessary evil?
  • Why work for someone who doesn’t value what I know?
  • Why work for someone who doesn’t know how to make money for her employees or herself?
  • Why work for someone who doesn’t understand the value proposition that the company offers to our customers and clients?
  • Why work for someone who’s more interested in being right?
  • Why would I work for someone who doesn’t know how to lead three people to the bathroom with a sign on her back?

The list grows and is most often unique to your circumstance. Here’s the practical exercise. Make a list. Make sure you are right.

List all the reasons why you don’t want to work for someone. Does it mean that starting your own business is the right answer? Maybe just working for someone else is the better answer.

Background

I’ve had twenty-seven plus companies from when I was twenty-one until I decided to retire at seventy-five. I started them, bought them, or took them over. It didn’t matter. I knew I had something to give that would benefit our customers, clients, employees, and me (in that order).

Was it easy

The short answer is NO. The long answer is that I loved what I did—over eighty-nine percent of everyone I hired or acquired stayed with me while I had control of the company. They felt (I think) that they were appreciated and had value.

My offer

I’ve written multiple books on business. The first is my memoir titled UnLikely. You can buy it from Amazon or click here to download it for FREE. From homeless to the man I am today. There are stories about how I got started. You’ll learn about when my flight was hijacked and my meetings with some special people. There are also a few business cases to review.

I’ll also give you a book titled Meet Taylor Richards (It’s also available on Amazon). It’s a short novel about a man returning from war and his first year back. He receives many blessings. His story will motivate and inspire you. It’s based on the lives of three people: my son, my best friend, and me. You can download this book for FREE by clicking here.

There are so many human interest stories here on Dancing Elephant Press. I want to encourage you to read them. They can be found here.

Thanks for reading,
