Summary

A woman seeks authenticity and self-fulfillment by embracing her true emotions and desires, despite societal judgments and potential failure.

Abstract

The poem "True Self" delves into the inner struggle of a woman who has experienced both highs and lows in life. Despite her varied circumstances, she has never truly felt like herself, having worn a metaphorical mask that led to a life filled with regret. She yearns to live authentically, guided by her deepest feelings, even if it means risking failure and losing everything. Criticized by others as crazy and foolish for not conforming to societal expectations, she remains undeterred. To her, living a life that aligns with her truest self is paramount, and she is prepared to face any consequence to achieve this. The woman's resolve is unwavering; she would rather try and fail repeatedly than live with the regret of not being true to herself.

True Self

This is what she wants, from the depths of her heart.

She had been lowly, She had been famous,

She had been magnificent, She had been ordinary.

But even with all of this, with the mask, she wore all through her life

She has never been herself.

She was sick of living with a mask

That only brought endless regret.

She wanted to live by her truest emotions and feelings,

Only then can she say she actually lived

Even if she fails in the end and her life is a failure,

Even if she loses everything else around her.

In the end, she didn’t care

That is what she wants to do.

They called her crazy and foolish,

They call her stubborn and stupid.

A person who can’t see the bigger picture

Yet so what.

She still wants to do it regardless,

That is how she wanted to live,

This is how she could find meaning in this life

She did not want to lie to herself anymore.

What’s so great about living a good life but feeling regret

What so great about compromising but lying to myself.

Even if the whole world turned their back on me

It wouldn’t matter to her.

So what if she failed,

She will just try and try again until she succeeds.

And even if She couldn't achieve her goal,

It was still fine, she would still be fine.

Regardless if no one understands or judges her

From the depths of her heart,

She wanted to live true to herself

Till the very end.
