True Friends — Multiplying the Good and Dividing the Evil

Celebrating our friendships with intent — includes an affirmation

True friendship multiplies the good in life and divides its evils. Strive to have friends, for life without friends is like life on a desert island… to find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune; to keep him is a blessing.

– Baltasar Gracian

When I read these words, I realize that I am blessed beyond measure. My life is filled with an abundance of friends, many that are as close to me as sisters.

Four go back to junior high and high school days, and they are still the greatest treasures in my life.

But I’ve added to my circle over the years, with many more friendships that number in the thirty- and forty-year marks. These are just as true and treasured. And as I continue on this journey of life, I keep discovering more friends that are worth their weight in gold.

Dwelling on the friends that are like jewels in my crown, my heart swells with love and warmth. They truly do multiply the good and divide the evil. I couldn’t begin to count the times that my friends have helped me through rough patches in life — always there, always ready to lend a shoulder or a hand.

Thinking about how these friends have enriched my life, I also realize that it all didn’t happen accidentally. It’s because we’ve all made efforts at friendship. We’ve taken time out for each other. We’ve talked, met for lunch, met for special activities, and stayed in contact with each other.

The efforts are not always identically reciprocal. Depending on what’s happening to us at different periods of time, sometimes I am the one extending the hand of friendship. Sometimes it’s the others. But essentially, over the length of many years, it all evens out and that bond is there, as fresh as when it was first formed.

What friendships in your life would be the ones you consider a real and valued friend? How does this friendship bless your life?

What small action can you take today, or this week, to nurture a friendship and let your friend know how much they mean to you?

Affirmation:

I am constantly blessed by the true and valued friendships in my life.
