Triple Greeting at the Mailbox

November Six Word Photo Challenge: “3”

Three frogs are better than two.

For three months this summer, a colony of frogs occupied a drainpipe just behind my mailbox. Each afternoon, except during one particularly dry, hot spell, some of them would be waiting for me.

Patiently, the frogs would wait, ready to retreat to the safety of the drainpipe if I moved too closely. Learning from experience, I came to avoid sudden movement and to keep my distance. In time, the frogs came to trust me.

A greeting committee of frogs is an incentive to check the mail. It’s also an incentive to take a camera along.

One day in July, a trio of frogs was waiting for me. I suspect they knew I planned a photography session because they positioned themselves closely together for a group shot. I didn’t know frogs could do this.

The colony thrived until late October. One day the frogs were there; the next, they were gone.

I look forward to next summer, and not just for the sunshine and warm weather.
