Summary

The article provides a technique to enhance the value gained from reading by actively engaging with the text to improve attention and memory retention.

Abstract

The article titled "Trick to Get 10x Value from Every Article You Read" emphasizes the importance of extracting valuable knowledge from reading, as opposed to passively consuming information. It suggests that the lack of retention from reading is often due to either the article's lack of substance or the reader's inability to focus and memorize due to information overload. The proposed solution is a simple technique: after reading each paragraph, pause to identify its main idea. This practice is said to improve understanding by forcing the brain to engage with the text's meaning, rather than just skimming through it. The technique is touted as beneficial for both articles and books, enhancing memory and helping readers discern the value of the content. If an article fails to offer valuable insights after applying the technique for several paragraphs, the reader is advised to consider stopping. The article concludes by encouraging readers to adopt this method for a deeper understanding and greater value from their reading materials.

Reading is the easiest way to get answers to any question. But reading itself is not valuable, except fiction perhaps.

What we value is the answer we get. The knowledge we didn’t have previously and received after reading.

But what do you remember from the last article you read?

I suppose not a lot… There are 2 potential reasons for this.

First — the article didn’t have value, so you couldn’t get any. Well, it isn’t your fault. Just don’t read such empty articles in the future at all.

Value your time.

Second — something wrong with your attention and memory. Actually, not wrong. We are overwhelmed with an enormous amount of information. So ignoring most of it is a great strategy.

But there is a trick on how to boost attention and activate memory to get more from reading.

The Technique

After reading a paragraph, pause for a second to figure out the main idea of the paragraph.

It’s that simple. All you need is to practice that new technique while reading.

This technique works well both with articles and with whole books. Actually, I recommend using it always when you read something.

Formulating the main point of paragraph forces your brain to think about the sense of reading, not skimming through the text.

Also, it allows you to see is there any value in the article you are reading. If you didn’t get any worth idea after reading 5–6 paragraphs, perhaps it’s time to stop.

Your memory will get better too. A structured set of points is easier to remember than plain text.

It’s the same with all information. The better it is structured, the easier it is to remember.

Final Thoughts

Improve your reading with this technique. Then be amazed at the new level of understanding for each text you read.

You will get the essence of each text and increase the amount of value you get from every piece of content.
