Treat Your Writing Life With Love
How to go from failure to curiosity

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ― Maya Angelou
Have you ever felt a deep pang of disappointment from the outcomes of your writing?
I am here to tell you; you are not alone.
Yesterday, I felt a twinge of failure, defeat, and heartache. As many were celebrating receiving a bonus for June, I felt like I had lost the battle.
In April, I earned a surprise $500 bonus. It was a boost that encouraged me to delve deeper into my writing. I became more vulnerable and more disciplined with my writing practice.
During May and June, I wrote from my heart and soul.
Those two months I only earned a little more than $60 total for my efforts. Even though I showed up regularly and ran my publication Thank You Notes, it felt as if I came up short.
Today, I choose to look upon these two months as a journey of growth and curiosity. I am not a failure, and neither are you as a writer.
Here I share with you three ways I am going to change my outlook from disappointment to curiosity.
Treat Yourself With Compassion:
“Talk to yourself like a cherished friend. Treat yourself with love and care. You are perfect, just as you are.”
As writers, we are all human beings turning our life experiences into articles, poems, stories, and books.
When we share with our whole hearts, there can be some bumps in the road.
Instead of treating ourselves with disdain and remaining in discomfort, we need to find more compassion for our spirits. We can treat writing and ourselves as beautiful friends.
One way I will do this is to thank my writing at the end of each session.
I will set the following intention:
Thank you words, writing, and readers for this lovely day. I appreciate this opportunity to share my life with you. Thank you for allowing me to be present today and open my heart to possibilities.
How can you set an intention with compassion for your writing?
Honor Your Personal Growth Journey:
“We should not judge people by their peak of excellence, but by the distance, they have traveled from the point where they started.”
― Henry Ward Beecher
Writing is a personal growth journey. This road is not for the faint of heart.
You are here because you chose to learn more.
The plan for us is not always clear. We must trust that we are in the right place right now.
To honor your personal growth journey through writing, love where you are.
I understand it is not easy to do that every day. Yesterday’s disappointment got the best of me. However, today I can stand tall. I know I am doing my best, and I know you are too.
Be proud of yourself for where you are now. Some days we stand on the pinnacle, and other days we struggle to climb the hill.
Every moment is part of our journey.
Here is an intention for your travels through writing:
I stand tall in knowing I am right where I need to be. I am on my journey, designed just for me. I may not know what is around the corner, but I can walk with confidence and love.
How can you treat yourself and your writing with more confidence?
Experiment More With Your Writing:
“What good is an idea if it remains an idea? Try. Experiment. Iterate. Fail. Try again. Change the world. ”― Simon Sinek.
I have experimented here and there with my writing.
I have written about minimalism, organizing, my spiritual journey, habits, housework, family matters, personal growth, travel stories, poetry, and more.
However, there is much more for me to explore.
I feel I need to go down some unexplored paths to find myself here on Medium and in my life.
This month and next month, I will try submitting to more publications, get out of my comfort zone, and try new things.
The more I experiment, the more I will learn about myself and my writing.
If I remain still and stay within my comfort zone, I will not find out what may be waiting for me on the other side.
Here is an intention for experimenting more with your writing:
Today I will try something new. It may seem scary at first, but it is only an experiment. I can try and see what happens. I will have fun and enjoy myself during this time. Thank you for the opportunity to grow.
