Guide dog life

Travel Guide by Cooper — At Last! Travel Advice for Dogs!

Cooper’s suggestions on how dogs can make the most of their vacation time.

Cooper is a Labrador Retriever Service Dog, more specifically a guide dog. He’s a pretty easygoing boy, as in this close-up of him smelling the flowers.

Inspired by the Travel Story by Paula Shablo, I’ll tell you what I’m 99% sure Cooper would tell you about going on a trip, including advice he’d give to dogs everywhere, before leaving, including how to avoid museums.

Which do you like better — packing or unpacking?

Cooper: Unpacking! Opening the duffel bag Pat packs for me is like opening presents! There are TV snacks, walking snacks, and picnic snacks. If she’s in a good mood about the trip, she’ll pack 🥓 bacon snacks!

Important note: before you leave, stand in front of the snacks cupboard and stare at it, this is your subtle hint that they can’t forget the snacks.

On a road trip — passenger or driver?

I’m usually the passenger since no one trusts me in the driver’s seat. But I usually get to lead the way in malls.

Important note about malls: I walk slowly past pet food stores so they get the idea to go inside. There are always special deals on treats at the checkout. Also, the people working there will ask if they can give you some samples — sit nice and look cute when this happens.

Do you prefer to drive or fly?

I’ll take the long and winding road rather than fly. We get stops to stretch our legs and use the facilities.

Important: I take my time sniffing around for the perfect spot, they’ll be ok with it and will say things like, ‘Let him sniff around, he’s been sitting so long it will need to work its way through’. I don’t get it but if they say it, they’re not rushing me.

Vacation time – in the city or by the sea?

I’d like to stay near the sea, so I can swim in it. You know Labs and swimming.

Road trips — get there fast or slow and see the sights?

Sightseeing! Sometimes Pat wants to get going but not me, I’d walk the whole way if I could.

Important: don’t forget your long leash, the one that stretches out for 20 feet. If you think they’ll forget it, pick it up between your teeth, walk over, and drop it at their feet. They’ll be impressed and say things like, ‘Hey Cooper, where did you learn this new trick?’ Just yawn.

Time to eat – Truck stop or restaurant?

Truck stop, naturally. Everyone’s in good moods and the plates are huge. Since Pat can never finish a burger, I get to share it, and I love truck-stop burgers!

Destination — Disneyland or Universal Studios?

Disneyland! For Pluto, the beautiful Lady from Lady and the Tramp, and I’m crying just thinking about Old Yeller, did you know his real-life name was Spike? And I can’t forget 101 Dalmatians, I hope they all show up!

Clothing – Pack lots of clothes or shop when you get there?

I’ve heard of clothing-optional places, which would suit me just fine, but Pat says she doesn’t want to send the other sunbathers into therapy. I’m not sure what that even means but as long as she doesn’t bring my shoes. I can’t stand those things for more than 5 minutes.

Sightseeing or Museum tour?

Sightseeing. Museums are too quiet and everyone’s wandering around with no sense of direction.

Important: when I see pamphlets in the hotel room, I pick them up between my teeth and drop them into the trash. Pat thinks Mr. Dale did it and he thinks she did it. We haven’t been to a museum since I started doing this.

Entertainment – Comic Convention or Renaissance Fair?

Comic or Star Trek Convention, please! They’re always hilarious. At our last Star Trek convention we saw a bunch of middle-aged guys dressed up like overweight Klingons. Mr. Dale couldn’t stop laughing and said his friends from the old days should stop already, and again, I don’t know what that means.
