Summary

The web content is a free verse poem reflecting on the unexpected transformation of one's appearance, inspired by Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."

Abstract

The poem titled "Transformation" presents a narrative of an individual who wakes up with an altered appearance, triggering a cascade of emotions ranging from confusion to anger. The protagonist grapples with their new identity, questioning the essence of their soul and the significance of their outer layer. In a dream-like sequence, the character contemplates using an astrologer's potion to reverse the change, yet also ponders embracing the improved aesthetics of their new form. The poem culminates in a moment of realization that the transformation was merely a dream, leading to a fleeting moment of relief, only to be replaced by shock upon seeing their altered reflection. The piece is influenced by Franz Kafka's novella "The Metamorphosis," which similarly explores the profound impact of a sudden physical change on an individual's life and the reactions of those around them.

Opinions

  • The author likely believes in the profound impact that personal transformation, whether physical or otherwise, can have on an individual's self-perception and identity.
  • The poem suggests a fascination with the idea that changes in appearance can lead to a reevaluation of one's self, echoing the themes from Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."
  • There is a hint of skepticism towards quick solutions offered by mystical means, such as the astrologer's potion, indicating a preference for personal acceptance over magical fixes.
  • The protagonist's vacillation between embracing the new self and longing for the original suggests a nuanced understanding of the challenges inherent in personal change.
  • The author may be commenting on the human tendency to fear change, yet also acknowledging the potential for change to be positive or even enlightening.

Transformation

a free verse poem on a heart-stopping surprise

you wake up, blurred vision, scampering backward, who’s this in the mirror?

you touch yourself, disbelief disbelief disbelief, soul’s the same, but the layer outside?

you are confused, dazed, sad, angry, who am i, new face, newer complications, you search for reasons, but what next?

you stand by the mirror, potion in your hand, shaking, astrologer’s potion, abracadabra, and back to original, should i believe him?

you think for a second, i look better than before, why not let it be? why not soak this in?

eyes wide open, you wake up with a jolt, all were a dream, the sigh of relief, but, a second of self-doubt, you jump towards the mirror,

you jump backward, eyes wide open, scampering in disbelief!

The idea for this came when I was re-reading Franz Kafka’s marvelous novella- “The Metamorphosis”, where a salesman named Gregor Samsa wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect. The story then details the complications that he faces.
