You can’t improve what you don’t track.

Although the online booking system at my sports studio has the data to make fancy graphs that help me improve my fitness, they don’t.

So I did it myself.

I made a template that tracks:

  • Styles/types of classes taken
  • Levels mastered
  • Total classes per month taken
  • Total classes taken
  • Days on which you do sports

If the online booking system you use isn’t catering to your needs either, this Google Sheets template may help.

Setting up the Dance, Fitness, or Sports Classes Google Sheets Tracking Template

There are two tabs: Tracker and Dashboard.

  • You’ll track your classes in the Tracker tab.
  • You’ll see all your totals and stats on the Dashboard tab. This one’s fully automated, so no need to do anything apart from look at it and gleam.
  • Okay, I lied. There’s a third Helper tab too. I hid it because you don’t need to see or edit it.

Let’s look at the Tracker tab.

Tracker tab with some dummy data.

I assume you’re not taking more than 400 sports classes this year, so I pre-filled the sheet with 400 rows.

You don’t have to touch these two columns:

  • Column A with the numbers
  • Column C which extracts the date in an abbreviation (e.g. Mon, Thu) from the dates you add to column B

All the rest? That’s just dummy data. To make the featured image pop and get you to click on this blog (it worked, didn’t it?). And to give you an idea of how to use the template.

Customize the styles, instructor, and level columns

Before you track anything, you want to customize these columns

  • Style
  • Instructor
  • Level

Open the dropdown menu and click on the pen icon or edit button.

Open a dropdown menu and click on the pen icon to edit the dropdown menu items.

Change the colors and the names of the classes, or “Add another item.” And when you’re done, click “Done.”

The sheet will prompt you to “Apply to all.”

Click “Apply to all”

Make sure to click this button. This will update all items in your dropdown menu with one click.

Repeat the process for the other columns.

The dummy data in columns B and D-J? You don’t need that anymore. Select it all and delete it.

Select these ranges to delete the dummy data.

With all the dummy data gone, your template is ready for use!

How to use the Dance, Fitness, or Sports Classes Google Sheets Tracking Template

Start by filling out the date you took a sports class. Use this keyboard shortcut:

  • 🖥 Mac: Command + ;
  • 🪟 PC: Ctrl + ;

Go through fields one by one.

Record your thoughts, feelings, and observations in columns G to I. And in case you post your videos on social, you can add the link to column J.

Lastly, if you don’t dance, you may want to change the chart titles to accurately display the name of your sport. Here’s a gif showing you how:

Click the chart, double-click the title, and change the title text. Performed on the wrong chart, but you get the gist.

Real-Life example: How I use my dance class tracking template

This year, I’m meticulously tracking my sports classes. Here’s what that looks like:

The author’s Dance Tracker with recordings of her post-class feelings and thoughts.

It’s not smart to rely on memory. Record your thoughts on the same day. Future-you will thank you.

The Dashboard gives me an immediate overview of my performance:

The author’s dance dashboard.

According to my tracked stats:

  • I have fixed dance days (due to my favorite instructors who teach on those days)
  • Intermediate is my current standard level
  • And I mostly take Commercial dance classes

Thanks to my tracking sheet, I know exactly what I did, when, and how it went.

On a final note

Of course, we can add many more whistles and bells to any template. For now, these metrics should do the trick.

Happy tracking!

May this template help you on your ongoing journey of getting, staying, and fit and fééling healthy as can be.
