Top Chef star’s sobriety maintentance involves fitness focus
Like Top Chef star and James Beard Award-winning culinary artist Gregory Gourdet, my path to staying off alcohol leads straight to the gym.
In an insightful interview this week with Civil Eats, Gourdet revealed that after kicking alcohol with the help of AA, he replaced his bad habit with a good one: working out consistently.
“Before I got sober, I never worked out and I never worried about what I ate. I never slept,” he told the site. “My first few years of sobriety, I felt that this weight had been lifted — I felt like I could do anything.
“It started with the things I could control, and that really has to do with my body and taking care of it — not staying up for three days at a time, but going for a 10-mile run.
“Some of us, in our quest to be a different person, realize that anything is possible and we can be healthy and happy at the same time.”

Replace drinking time with something better
I love this, because it mirrors my own strategy for avoiding alcohol.
I’ve written about this a bunch of times already, but I’m not built for sitting in front of the TV or having idle time at night. With frequent trips to the gym, I fill my time with something productive and feel happier and healthier as a result.
I love inspiring stories of people whose careers took off after getting drugs out of their system and out of their life, and Gourdet’s certainly is that.
In addition to his two star turns on Top Chef, he has a new book out (here’s my affiliate link if you’re interested) and a new Haitian restaurant in the Portland area called Kann. I’d love to check it out if I ever get to that fine city.
In a restaurant industry that’s known for producing and maintaining substance abuse problems, I think Gourdet is an inspiration.
Good luck to Gregory on the new restaurant and to anyone who is taking small steps today (or even just thinking about it)!
