Top 8 Apps I Use to Run My Business, Daily
by Scott L. Steward, Founder, Genius Lab, Inc.
I am an emerging entrepreneur still operating my latest venture in the startup phase of business as a bootstrapper. We operate on a very lean budget but efficiency and productivity are top priorities for the business.
My number one app is Google G-suite. By far, when it comes to file organization and document sharing with multiple collaborators, G-Suite is by far the most accessible and useful. G-Suite works with Android and IOS, seamlessly. For me, everything happens first on the Google Calendar (if it’s not on my calendar it’s not a thing), then on to Google Drive where I organize my folders, slides, and spreadsheets, all In one place. G-Suite security is exactly what a business owner needs, especially for the price.

When it comes to social media, HootSuite is excellent for social media planning. Hootsuite is easy to plan posts across multiple social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. HootSuite makes it easy to upload your media file, type your caption, and set the day and time you want to publish your post, saving you an unbelievable amount of time. For the price, Hootsuite is impeccable.
To create my social media posts and other documents, Canva.com is super fun and cool to use. After I have drafted that proposal, workbook, or social media post, I take to Canva.com to add that special flair to the document. I have even used Canva to design t-shirts and Zoom virtual backgrounds. Canva lacks a bit with its collaboration function only allowing the sharing of documents without synchronous sharing of documents in real-time. Canva offers a ton of great templates to add enough variety so your social media posts don’t look too familiar to anyone else. Canva.com works really well if you can apply your brand colors with the exact hex code. Canva.com is awesome for the price.
When I want to be sure to get graphic design done right, short of using Photoshop (I don’t know how to use Photoshop) I use Fiverr.com. I use fiverr.com for brochures, video intros, infographics, digital brochures, workbooks, resumes, and logos. At the beginning, 2016, almost all the freelance jobs on Fiverr.com were five dollars. Today you can still get a high-quality gig completed for under a hundred dollars and within a two to three-day turnaround time (if you know how to communicate to your service provider).
To keep up with my team, I prefer Trello.com over Asana and Slack. Trello.com is more focused on project management as opposed to the simple sharing of conversations and documents. Trello.com is great for informing everyone on the team what’s being worked on, what’s been completed, who’s responsible for what, and by when.Trello.com makes it easy to share big tasks and the details to each task. Trello.com operates like using sticky notes Trello.com refers to as ‘cards’. Cards can be easily moved and renamed making your Trello.com dashboard flexible and fluid.
Finally, I use Zoom. Zoom is the best video conferencing platform available that has the most stability and uptime. Zoom also has the clearest image capture and it can handle the most amount of people online and one time with minimal lag. Zoom’s Breakout Rooms are a dope feature (premium account) virtual backgrounds, raise hand feature, screen share, and recording is all awesome on Zoom; even the scheduling of meetings is super easy in Zoom. I really like the new security protocols and Zoom easily connects with my Google calendar and other popular calendars like iCal.
As for my CRM, I like HonorServicesOffice.com. They may lack the look-appeal of their web app compared to other CRM platforms, but they make up for it in ease of use and simplicity. When you need a place to store your user data or customer information, HonorServicesOffice is my go-to. If something should ever happen to MailChimp or ConvertKit, I trust HonorServicesOffice.com to be there. They are still developing but they also have a very close relationship with their users so getting answers to your questions is super simple.
Finally, when it comes to the customer journey, I use MailChimp. MailChimp is still hands-down the easiest platform to use when you want to automate your user journey and lead capture. Once you learn the nuisances of MailChimp, it’s super easy to use.
