Abstract

The article is a review of the top 5 TV series from Netflix in 2022, as chosen by the author. The author acknowledges that with over 220 million subscribers in 190 countries, it is impossible to please everyone with their choices. The list includes Manifest Season 4, which was picked up by Netflix to provide closure for fans after NBC canceled it. The Midnight Club, based on a Christopher Pike novel, is a coming-of-age horror story that was

Top 5 TV Series from Netflix in 2022

Although it’s challenging to narrow down the hundreds of TV series from 2022, these were my top five Netflix TV series. Agree or disagree? Please engage in the comments.

Netflix has more than 220 million subscribers in 190 countries. So naturally, these five will not appeal to everyone.

Some will be fresher in our minds because they played recently, and some might not get a fair shake because they played earlier in the year. Sorry about that, but that’s the reality of listicles.

Anyway, this is just the way I see it. Take a look; there might be one or two you missed.

I will list these in reverse order, much like David Letterman used to do.

#5 — The Manifest Season #4

There was nothing totally unusual about Montego Flight 828 for the passengers and crew. Sure, there was some turbulence, but it was otherwise routine. At least for those onboard.

Those with family and loved ones onboard dealt with the uncertainty of their fate, thinking it crashed five years ago. Many moved on with their lives. Some remarried.

Season one to three aired on NBC starting in 2018. Netflix picked it up, knowing it had a large following, who wondered what happened to the 8–2–8er. It’s actually quite addictive. Thus, they picked it up for one season to provide that closure. Thanks, Netflix.

#4 — The Midnight Club

The Midnight Club is based on the Christopher Pike coming-of-age horror novel of the same name. Each story is a chapter in the book, The Wicked Heart, See You Later, Witch, Gimme a Kiss, Road to Nowhere, or The Eternal Enemy.

The eight characters in this story are terminal teen patients at a hospice (Brightcliffe). One girl says, “A hospice? My parents told me it was summer camp.”

At midnight, they meet in the library and “make ghosts.” They make a pact that when one crosses over, they should do everything possible to contact those left behind.

“To those before, to those after. To us now, and to those beyond — welcome to The Midnight Club.”

Some will say this story is a bit of a rip-off of the story within the Goosebumps series Are You Afraid of the Dark, “The Midnight Society,” which I wrote about in my October ’21 coming-of-age anthology.

However, because millions of stories in various genres have been written for our entertainment, it is difficult to find an original idea these days.

Other than it being coming-of-age horror and the participants holding their storytelling meeting at midnight, there are very few other similarities.

There are so many stories going on within the story. You’re going to love it!

Unfortunately, Netflix did not renew the series, so season one is the only season. If you’re wondering what about the cliffhangers and what would have happened to the others, read Mike Flanagan’s (“The Haunting of Hill House”) blog post, ‘The Midnight Club’: The Full Ending Explained and Your Questions Answered.

#3 — All of Us Are Dead

This is not for children. It is rated 18+ due to graphic violence, gore, battle scenes, and body mutilation, like most zombie flicks.

It is a zombie horror story that takes place in a school. Several students are trapped in classrooms, on the roof, in the cafeteria, and in other spots. They come together and try to fight the zombies and stay alive, uneaten, until help arrives. But…will it?

All of Us Are Dead is the best Korean series since The Squid Games or Train to Busan. This is a tie with Train to Busan for the best zombie series of all time. IMHO. In fact, one of the students says, “It’s Train to Busan.”

It’s not just a horde of bloodthirsty zombies. Many side stories are going on within the story. What’s more, these are not the slow AF “Walking Dead” kind of zombies; they are very fast.

All of Us Are Dead Season 2 is in production and should premiere in June 2023.

#2 — Stranger Things Season 4

Unless someone comes up with a thoroughly compelling reason to continue it, Season 5 of Stranger Things will be the last. There are already rumors about how it will end, but I won’t bother discussing those.

This Duffer brothers’ creation is impressive, and season four gives you thirteen hours of more binge-worthy drama and turmoil.

“Darker and denser than its predecessors, Stranger Things’ fourth chapter sets the stage for the show’s final season in typically bingeworthy fashion.” — Rotten Tomatoes.

#1 — Wednesday Addams

Tim Burton strikes again! Jenna Ortega “took the world by storm,” as the new face of the Addams Family. Sorry about the cliché, but there’s no other way to say it.

Her face is everywhere. Everyone wants her to promote their product, and when you’re not watching her in a commercial, someone is showing her dance scene.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I can’t wait for season 2. Hurry up, Burton. There is “no time to rest on your laurels,” get busy. Oh, there I go again with the clichés.

Anyway, if you haven‘t seen it, grab the kids and some popcorn. You are in for a treat.

Honorable Mentions

I’m sure Alice in Borderland Season 2 will hit my list of top shows in 2023, as even though it was released in 2022, I haven’t had time to watch it all yet. Plus, many other things are going on, especially around the holidays.

Will the burning question be answered?

“If we clear all the games, can we return to the real world?”

Or will they treat us to another season?

The Sandman, a Neil Gaiman comic book creation, is an elaborate story of gods and demons. In a year when The Rings of Power and House of Dragons comes to the home TV, The Sandman is easily equally powerful. Whether you are familiar with Gaiman’s story or not, you will enjoy this epic tale.

“While it may hold few surprises for fans of the source material, The Sandman’s first season satisfyingly adapts an allegedly unfilmable classic.” Rotten Tomatoes.

Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story once again, I just got so busy that I didn’t watch all of it yet, but what I’ve seen is awesome.

Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — same thing here. I have not finished it yet. However, Episode #3 — The Autopsy is one everyone is talking about, and yes, I did watch up to through Ep 5.

Cabinet of Curiosities Episode 3 ‘The Autopsy’ Ending Explained

Of course, it depends on what you like, but the Umbrella Academy: Just Another Day, Vikings: Valhalla, The Witcher: Blood Origin, and The Lincoln Lawyer were all entertaining and well worth bingeing, IMO.
