Top 5 Reasons Why You Need To Go On A Retreat
It’s more than just good for your health!
Let me revisit my camp Yoga statement: IT WAS SO AWESOME. Can you tell I had an amazing time?
I yoga-ed, napped, did Muay Thai, meditated, journaled, and uncovered parts of myself that I didn’t know needed attention. So many gifts throughout the weekend, and may , many, many amazing connections made (and deepened ones that already existed).
There’s something about being on my mat that gives me such solitude, mental cleansing, and peace. Tears come sometimes, but so does joy, fulfilment and clarity. Three days of yoga and fun movement, outdoor activities was unbelievable. I also brought my paddleboard for Sunday afternoon pre-going-home water time.
Going on retreats can have many different intentions.
Mine for camp yoga was just to find joy and enjoy myself. I wanted to be completely present in the events, classes, and interactions that I had. A complete submersion in the now.
Let me tell you how much I value taking time to go away and reset yourself, even if it’s just a short weekend away.
- It’s so important to give yourself that time back. To do exactly what you want, when you want it and nobody can tell you otherwise.
- It’s freeing to be able to choose and deliver to your body the things it needs. Even if that means you’re active.
- Healing and resetting doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to sit around and do nothing. It could be that it’s all chalk full of activities that make your soul feel replenished and rejuvenated.
My first retreat
Last November I went to the Trace in Oak Lake. It was my first cold plunge in a 0C lake, and exposure to cold/hot contrast therapy for healing. The whole experience changed my life. Yoga, amongst a couple other things, saved my life. I will jump at the chance to go away for a retreat anytime I can afford it and prioritize it.
I had many things to let go of and digest last November, and am still moving through a lot of things. All of them are, in my empowered context, things that are happening for me to grow.
I’m currently in a season of “planting” and “gardening”; as I feel my time of repair is healed and complete. Regardless of the season, my yoga mat gives me peace, solitude, and a place to let it all out. It’s a place of release, exhale , and strength. I put a protective bubble around myself when I am on my mat, and give myself the permission to notice, embrace and let go of all the things that come up while I flow through the sequences in class. Sometimes I feel deep pain and sorrow, sometimes it’s just joy and elation; and sometimes it’s a mix of everything. Often I’m just happy to be able to move my body in the ways that I want.
Final plea!
I invite you to find a way you can fully immerse yourself in a reset for your body, mind, and spirit: a retreat, weekend away, or even an afternoon sitting in a park alone with your thoughts. It’ll pay you back in dividends. After all, you deserve it!
