Bodycam Footage Shows Illinois Woman Laughs, Plays Dumb After Killing Two People In Deadly DUI Crash

Today’s case takes us to Peoria Illinois, where 23-year-old Stephanie Melgoza lived in 2022.

At that time the young woman was studying at Bradley University and like any girl her age she liked to go out on weekends to have fun.
On April 10, Stephanie went out with some friends and had a lot of drinks at a bar in East Peoria. The problem is that when he left the place he decided to take the car despite his drunkenness.
At about 10:15 pm, the young woman ran over two pedestrians who were leaving the same bar she had been in.
Paul Prowant, 55, and Andrea Rosiewicz, 43, were surprised by the student’s vehicle and did not survive the strong impact.

As always happens in these cases, the agents who came to the place recorded everything with their body camera and it must be said that certain fragments are quite shocking.
The images show a clearly intoxicated Stephenie talking to the agents.

At one point Stephanie tells how everything happened and without being able to pronounce the words well she tells the agent that she does not understand the accident since she is a very precautive driver.
The agents give Stephenie a sobriety test where she doesn’t stop laughing, this would not matter if she hadn’t ended the lives of two people before.

The young woman was transferred to a medical center in Peoria where she continued laughing and singing. She believed that the next morning she could attend her classes until an agent put her in her place and told her that she would go to jail, something that left her speechless.

Finally, on April 12, Stephenie was arrested and charged with several charges, including reckless driving resulting in death. Already in court she pleaded not guilty.
After paying bail, he was released and continued to attend his classes. It is known that the accident occurred weeks before his graduation and that although he received his university degree he was not allowed to participate in the ceremony thanks to a protest by the student body.
The sentence:
In February 2023 and after an agreement with the prosecutor’s office, Stephanie pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated driving and aggravated reckless driving. For all these reasons, in April she was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

The relatives of the victims asked for the maximum penalty of 28 years for her since, according to their selfishness, she had destroyed many families.

Although Stephanie remained inexpressive during the statements of the relatives, she twisted her hands under the table and seemed to tremble. At one point he addressed them and told them that he would live every day with what he had done.

Kevin Sullivan’s defense lawyer, asked for a milder sentence pointing out that his defendant called 911 after the accident and cooperated with the authorities.
Sullivan added that Stephanie wants to make her story public and dissuade others from driving drunk after her release from prison.
The judge, for his part, said the following:
“I don’t expect this sentence to please anyone, but it’s very fair.”
