Today May Be the Best Day of Your Life

And You Don’t Even Know It…Yet

If you ask someone about the best day of their life, you will likely get the standard answers, the day I got married (or divorced), the day my child was born, the day I bought my alpaca farm.

And I’m sure those were great days but is that it? Will you never have a ‘best’ day again? Well, that’s kind of depressing. But, I’d like to propose a different way to look at your days. Because I don’t think we appreciate the days that we have. Each and every day that we have. Because in thinking about my days, especially those in the last few months, I have come up with this:

It’s the days that pass by unnoticed that may be the best days of our lives.

Sure, some days are filled with fun and exciting things, and those are memorable. They stand out in a crowd of days that we overlook. But are they great? Are they the best days? I don’t think so.

Recently, I had a day of nothing memorable. It would have completely escaped my attention except for one thing. As I was shutting things down for the night, I thought to myself, man, that was a great day.

Why? I don’t know. We didn’t go anywhere or do much out of the ordinary. The day started slow, and we tapered off from there. But it was, I don’t know… pleasant. Nothing particularly great happened, but nothing bad happened either. We didn’t even go anywhere except for a walk around the neighborhood.

But aren’t those the best kinds of days?

I try to start each day with a positive attitude. Maybe not positive so much as ambitious. Today, I’m going to get this stuff done. And I usually do. And I did on that day. I checked everything off my list.

But it wasn’t much of a list, to begin with.

You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So get on your way ~Dr. Seuss

I think it’s a good idea to begin each day this way. Part of your morning routine should be to mentally and spiritually embrace the coming day and be ready to take it on. To slay each dragon that rises out of the east until it scurries off into the west with its tail between its legs.

But some days aren’t like that. And you can’t really plan for those days.

Things just happen. The day moves from start to finish with nothing remarkable to set it apart.

But somehow it is different. It’s a day that will go unnoticed in the grand scheme of things, and that’s okay.

If you are still working, those days are rare. They won’t happen at work, and on the weekends, you are scampering about trying to handle a week’s worth of chores. Maybe on some vacation days now and then, you may experience it.

But once you are retired, days sort of flow into each other. I am a believer in continuing to differentiate them in some small way. And I still try to make the weekends memorable. But at least once every few weeks, you ave one of those days. They start easy and meander from one pleasant moment to the next.

And at the end of the day, you say to yourself, that was the best day ever.
