Today I Sat on my Porch During a Thunderstorm

It was lovely.

My Front Porch

Today I sat on my porch during a thunderstorm. The winds picked up and howled through the leaves and limbs of the trees surrounding my house. The thunder was light and not too loud. There was no lightning to be seen. The rain picked up and moved with the wind. I closed my eyes as the rain misted across my skin. It was lovely.

I realized at this moment that I spend so much time worrying about everything around me. People I love. Work. Dreams. Tasks that I need to complete. Situations that I cannot control. I let the worry twist my insides. I neglect to appreciate the smaller moments in life like a thunderstorm.

I know what you are probably thinking. It’s just a thunderstorm. They happen all the time. There isn’t anything special about them.

I would agree with you on any other normal day, but this thunderstorm is special. You see, during this thunderstorm, I let go. Even if it was for a brief and tiny moment, I let go. My worries were gone. The peace I felt at that moment was amazing.

I often wonder how people achieve this feeling on a daily basis. I watch videos on meditation and self-awareness. I’ve seen and read the information on how to let go of all the negativity in your life. How though?

I can never figure out how to turn my brain down. I can never figure out how to stop feeling everything and every person around me. Sometimes I wish I could find a switch within me to turn everything off for a couple of hours during the day. I can’t imagine the peace that I would feel in those few hours.

I catch myself having moments like the thunderstorm more and more often. I am proud to say that they do not go unnoticed. I appreciate these moments when they occur. I just wish I could figure out the secret to turning these moments into everyday experiences for myself.

If I could do this, it would be like finding a buried treasure.
