To Unfasten A Heart-Shaped Locket, Looking Within
Villanelle

To unfasten a heart-shaped locket, looking within An old photo of you expresses more than words say My heart breaks, yet I must move on, holding up my chin
I can feel your touch now; Palmolive clean hands, soft skin Guiding my Crayola’s, “Stay within the lines,” you’d say To unfasten a heart-shaped locket, looking within
The pep in your step, not walking on needle or pin You meant every word you said, separating from play My heart breaks, yet I must move on, holding up my chin
I smell your kidney bean soup, my favorite for din A print of you sparks all senses; savory display To unfasten a heart-shaped locket, looking within
My father, your spitting image; blonde hair, blue-eyed twin He carries your strength and weight, wiping my tears away My heart breaks, yet I must move on, holding up my chin
Oh, Grandmother, perhaps you are my favorite kin Although departed, your sharp wisdom guides me each day To unfasten a heart-shaped locket, looking within My heart breaks, yet I must move on, holding up my chin
My poem is dedicated to the loving memory of all grandparents
