To My Unknown Lover
A poem
Do you know what it feels like to find true love?
A few days ago, I was on a phone call with a friend. We hadn’t spoken in a while and it was all my fault. You see, this friend had tried to contact me earlier. They would send a lot of texts and even some pictures on WhatsApp, but I had been very busy, too busy to get back to them.
I always had it at the back of my mind to reach back, to text back, to give them a call, but somehow I couldn’t bring myself to. And then one day, I did. On this fateful Thursday, somehow I found the time but also the courage to oil the many relationships I had left creaking because I hadn’t serviced them. I picked up the phone and called my friend.
The conversation was very beautiful. We had some catching up to do, and we shared plenty of laughter. Somewhere in the conversation, my friend challenged me to a thought experiment. The thought experiment involves me writing a poem to my lover.
The poem below is a result of that thought experiment. In this poem, I am writing to and about a lady whom I can’t forget because she left an indelible mark on my heart. I hope you enjoy it, and that it gives you an inspiration to write your partner a love note today, or at least do something similarly sweet for them.
To my unknown lover
Oh lady of steel, diamonds, and spine
To you I write, while my head is clear of wine
While my mind stays beholden to thoughts of you
Of your prowess, may my pen do justice, as much as a pen can do
The day I met you, sunny and bright it was
Your smile lit up the room, and the sun was left for gores.
Your gaze pierced through me deep into my naked soul
Your kindness and warmth I could only live to extoll.
Your beauty is as striking as it is bright and fiery
Your kindness is as fiery and warm even to a soul so dreary
I live to tell of the wisdom that flows from your bosom
For your name is Grace and class and your words are wholesome
Though my head be not filled with wine
My heart stays dizzy from your words so divine
For my insecurities, in your words they find strength,
And my sunny days you bless with length
How do I get you out of my mind?
Oh lady of steel, diamonds, and spine
