To Live A Better Life, You Should Stop Complaining

I have a very nice colleague who is used to complaining. She has lots of problems as we all do, but she feels relieved when she speaks to a friend and expresses her emotions. Through her conversation, you can portray and depict the negative aspects of her life. As a friend, I feel empathy towards her and helpless that I cannot alleviate her pain. I often wonder what life is like for her.

When I look back, I was in fact just like my friend. When faced with negative situations, I would complain, and people would listen to me. Little did I know that the people who I thought were patiently listening to me, were getting annoyed more than anything else.

Then I decided to make an effort and improve my situation, and I started feeling better. I tried to control one negative thought at a time. Of course, it didn’t solve my problems but shifting my attention on the practice was like training a muscle: every day I avoided one complain, and I felt stronger. Whenever a friend asked me “how are you?”, I replied “I can’t complain”. This sentence blocked the negative energy from flowing out of my mouth and I started talking about something else. It was an effort at first, but it worked like a mantra to me. My negative sentences slowly disappeared.

Why do we complain, after all? We complain when things don’t go the way we expect. Thoughts like: ‘look what happened to me’, ‘I am such an unlucky person’, ‘people don’t understand me’, mushroom in our stressed minds. When we complain we try to protect ourselves and look for scape goats. It temporarily lifts our spirit and makes us feel better. Complaining makes us negative and pessimistic, and it doesn’t change the reality of things. It weakens our capability to solve problems and has a negative effect on everything around us.

It is important to recognize the negative thoughts that cross our minds and make a conscious effort to replace them by positive affirmations. We need to be aware that we are complaining and accept the reality of things and our responsibility.

It is a step by step process, which starts from the moment you wake up till you go to sleep. It worked for me, and I am sure it will work for you!
